Things to bear in mind when talking about Al ... some notes for the critically-minded Link to PDF: criticaledtech.com/wp-content/u...
9 talking points about engaging in AI criticism - link to full PDF in post ... black page with white writing and bright yellow headlines. The 9 talking points are:

#1. Are you really talking about Al? (part 1)
#2. Are you really talking about Al? (part 1)
#3. There is a lot more to Al than GenAl
#4. Al has a 70-year history ... and a 70-year history of critique
#5. We need to talk about 'actually existing' Al
#6. Your own experiences of using Al do not give you any particular expertise to talk about how other people experience and/or should be using Al
#7. One does not have to have 'built Al' in order to have opinions about the societal application of Al
#8. If we're going to be critical then we need to be constructively critical
#9. Other Al is possible!

Just finished checking the proofs for this new book (which should be out around Easter 2027 I think). I was *very* reticent about writing a book on AI (given how much noise there has been over the past few years), but this has turned out really well I think. Other ways of doing AI are possible!
… and I still can’t get LinkedIn to accept alt-text descriptions(!) … so here is the alt-text:

Chapter 4: AI and the organisation of education

Chapter 7: Reimagining AI and education: practical ways forward

New blog post - a reminder that more 'digital literacy' is very rarely the answer to any of the problems of the digital age ... but that critical digital literacy is definitely something worth encouraging! criticaledtech.com/2026/09/10/d...
digital literacy needs to be called out for what it is – a distraction, a smokescreen, a disingenuous gesture towards empowering people in the digital age. Instead, much more attention needs to be paid to the idea of critical digital literacy – an approach that genuinely sets out to help people actively question, scrutinise, challenge and resist the worse aspects of the tech that they are presented with … and actively engage with the idea of other technologies.

"Exploring Teachers’ Repair & Maintenance Work Around GenAI Technologies" ... new open access article from our Swedish research on the considerable behind-the-scenes repair work that teachers end up having to do when using GenAI tools to 'assist' them! www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
New article in Discourse journal (by Marita Ljungqvist, Anders Sonesson and Neil Selwyn)

Article title: Fixing teachers’ problems? exploring teachers’ repair and maintenance work around generative AI technologies

Abstract: The promise that AI tools will relieve teachers of tedious tasks and liberate time for more ‘valuable’ work with students has become a dominant narrative. However, the implementation of automated technologies raises questions around how human labour is implicated and situated in these processes. From the perspective of maintenance and repair studies we approach the often-hidden labour that teachers undertake when engaging with generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) technologies. Drawing on interviews with Swedish teachers we expose the tools’ inherent limitations in teaching contexts, and highlight the pedagogical, social, and moral dimensions of educational practice. We argue that these essentially inexplicable and ungeneralizable aspects of teaching – grounded in teachers’ situated awareness, professional experience, and tacit knowledge – cannot be codified or reduced to training data. Our results demonstrate the need for a radical rethinking of the forms of AI that education could benefit from – and those it should resist

In advance of this week's two-day humanities & liberal arts symposium on digital futures (held in HK & Zhuhai), here are the ten talking-points that I'll be highlighting to consider when thinking about the role(s) that digital tech should be playing in humanities, liberal arts & cultural education
#10. Some of the most exciting and impactful forms of digital education are to be found in non-formal education ... we should be looking to libraries, museums, galleries and archives for inspiration

#9. Some of the most powerful forms of digital education support informal learning ... learning that is led by people and their passions

#8. Digital tech can support some forms of learning ... but most learning in humanities, cultural and liberal arts education is profoundly human in its nature and form

#7. Digital tech is not a direct substitute for a good teacher ... there is much that teachers do that tech cannot

#6. Contemporary digital tech is imbued with values of efficiency, optimisation, standardisation, scalability, monitoring and control ... these values do not translate easily into all educational contexts

#5. One of the key promises of digital education is the elimination of friction ... yet friction is an integral part of learning

#4. Digital tech is data-driven ... but much of what happens in education cannot be represented in data

#3. The digital age is inherently unfair ... digital education needs to be deliberately designed to be fairer

#2. The dominance of Big-Tech corporations and for-profit Ed-Tech is incompatible with the ideals of public education

#1. Digital tech is embroiled in environmental and ethical harms that educators cannot continue to ignore

But looking forward 100 maybe 200 years in the future, the COVID 19 pandemic will be seen as be a major turning point in education. So, we need to be clear about how the pandemic has changed narratives about education … and we also need to be clear about what lessons we can draw from this”

Privately funded educational technology is a threat to the very idea of public education. Edtech presents its agenda as apolitical, as a matter of efficiency or smart management, concealing a far more insidious mission: the monetization of teaching and learning, and a labor regime organized around total surveillance.
