Ultrastructural membrane dynamics of mouse and human cortical synapses
Eddings et al. illustrate that synaptic membrane trafficking can be studied with millisecond resolution in resected human brain tissues using the technique “zap-and-freeze” time-resolved electron microscopy. Using this method, they find that synaptic vesicles are recycled via ultrafast endocytosis in human neocortical slices.

The emerging mechanisms and functions of microautophagy - Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology
Microautophagy involves direct engulfment of cytoplasmic components, including proteins and organelles, by lysosomes and late endosomes for degradation. Although it is one of three main types of autophagy — along with macroautophagy and chaperone-mediated autophagy — its mechanisms and physiological roles have only recently begun to emerge.

How do neuronal lysosomes maintain functional synapses? - BIOspektrum
The complex architecture of neurons poses unique challenges in maintaining proteome balance. Lysosomes, cellular metabolic hubs and main degradative organelles, play a central role in this process, thus supporting synaptic activity. Recent findings suggest that a specialized subpopulation of lysosomes in dendrites fuse with plasma membrane and release aggregation-prone proteins to the extracellular space. At the same time, they lead to structural changes in synapses, an intriguing link between the control of protein concentration and structural synaptic plasticity.
