Omg. The "rabbi" he was talking with was actually the charismatic prophet and messianic Christian conspiracist Jonathan Cahn.

Billionaire GOP donor Peter Thiel blamed Christianity for the proliferation of "wokeness" in a recent interview, lamenting that it takes the side of victims.

Finally reading Gutierrez deeply has made me very cognizant of how much political theology operates according to a kind of moral perfectionism. This is directly opposed to the historical enmeshment that liberation demands.

Thanks, Austin! Yes, God Gave Rock and Roll to You argues that American evangelicalism has been "Pentecostalized" through song. In the aughts, this was a source of frustration for Reformed folks like John Piper. www.amazon.com/God-Gave-Roc...

It’s hard to overstate what a strange bird charismatic reformed churches are. It wasn’t until I read Carlos Eire’s “The Flew” that I came to understand just how central cessationism was for broad swaths of the reformation. to be undone by some excellent key changes.

That is not to say 7m is incoherent with motifs in popular Pentecostal piety. But there is more of a memetic than systematic quality to Pentecostal theology. It’s more helpful to talk about motifs like “anointing” that reoccur in both popular worship and programs like 7m (piece forthcoming on this)

I think a lot of writing on Pent/charis movements overvalues figures like Wagner and ideas like the 7m mandate. I PROMISE you most congregants have never heard of either. But they all sing!

This is actually in many ways a story about music. Reformed evangelicals started listening to and singing Pentecostal and Charismatic music. This had observable effects on their theology and ecumenical attitude. @drleahpayne.bsky.social is the real authority here.

Paula White, Doug Wilson, and Patrick Deneen might all be called “Christian Nationalists.” But their theology and correlate political strategies are radically different. That the adherents of these projects cooperate is a more complicated reality than a simple umbrella term allows.

It’s a term like “dark ages.” It says a lot more about the normative assumptions of the user than the phenomena it purports to describe.

“Christian Nationalism” as a term has stigmatized a lot and explained very little. I’m ready to see it retired so we can more closely examine the four or five discrete theopolitical it has tried to name.
