Inconvenient truth: ‘Most LIVESTOCK in the 🇺🇸 is #FactoryFarmed’ (And no, scaling up #FreeRange farming is neither mathematically feasible nor morally desirable. It is objectively wrong to harm animals when avoidable)
Screenshot from https://ourworldindata.org/data-insights/almost-all-livestock-in-the-united-states-is-factory-farmed

Our World in Data graphic

Most livestock in the United States
is factory-farmed

"Factory farms" are defined as "concentrated animal feeding operations" based on the US EPA's definition of holding a large number of animals in an intensive feeding operation for more than 45 days.

🐓 99.96% of chickens are factory-farmed.
That's 9.2 billion.

🐟 100% of farmed fish are factory-farmed.
That's 530 million.

🐣 98.3% of egg-laying hens are factory-farmed.
That's 380 million.

🦃 99.8% of turkeys are factory-farmed.
That's 260 million.

🐄 75% of cows
are factory-farmed.
That's 66 million.

🐖 98.6% of pigs
are factory-farmed.
That's 73 million.

what is needed is for an end to the farming of animals. animals are sentient beings, not vegetables, so why be treated as disposable exploitable objects for human pleasure and tradition? when we humans can thrive on plant-fungi diets? animal farming is horrible, and also happens to be

kaktusbird @kaktusbird.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
and many people think that suffering only happens in very rare cases but no, it is ingrained in the very standard practices. and slaughterhouses are horrible places where the animals tremble in fear waiting to be killed... and all those who are farmed are sent there when "spent".

A mute swan cygnet pushing through the water. At first I couldn't figure out where the bands of yellow/gold were coming from. It doesn't look like sunlight or an image artifact then I realised they're reeds moving in the breeze at the side of the lake between me and the swan.

there is a lot of propaganda from animal farming industry, and many people even think that veganism is "extreme", which is astounding, seeing as it is basic morality of not causing needless deliberate harm. i think what is extreme is causing the horrible harm when we no longer need to.

kaktusbird @kaktusbird.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
there is no "humane" torture, breeding sentient beings forth to be productive and sending them to wait to be killed, when it is unnecessary. and we humans thrive on plant-based diets & so have no need to exploit animals. and most people don't even know yet how versatile and delicious vegan food is 💚

kaktusbird @kaktusbird.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
basic standard practices of farming animals would be considered torture if done to a dog, in western societies. but our modern societies, globally, treat non-human animals like disposable trash, legally. the only way to change this is be vegan and inform others 👍💚.

kaktusbird @kaktusbird.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
helping is good👍, but the most important thing we can do is not harm them (and other sentient beings) in the first place, i.e. being vegan, aka avoiding unnecessary harm where possible & practicable. veganism is also vastly better for environment, climate, biodiversity, rainforests, antibiotics etc.

So this photo contains zero birds, but in my defence, we were sitting outside waiting for birds. But the sun was almost setting and the backlit Snapdragons stole the show!
A backlit snapdragon flower that is partially opened. The background is dark green with a round sun like highlight in the top right corner. It’s actually an out of focus highlight that appears large because it’s a telephoto lens. The pink snapdragon flower is rim lit but has some light bouncing back to light the flower.
For those interested, the lens is a 400mm and required 5 frames focused on slightly different parts of the flower to be stacked together so the entire flower was sharp .

A yellow and black swallowtail butterfly hovers above a pink flower on the right hand side of the frame. It is looking straight on at the camera and its wings are nearly flat. Both antennae are clearly seen above its head. Another blurry small pink flower can be seen in the lower left, and the rest of the background is blurred greens.

Go vegan.
A bold, multicoloured background with soft lights and sparkles frames the text: “THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ABUSING A CAT OR DOG, AND ABUSING A COW, PIG, OR CHICKEN.” The quote challenges speciesist thinking by comparing the unjust treatment of commonly protected animals like cats and dogs to the widespread use and abuse of farmed animals.

#scape to the quiet of the #lake #GreatEgret #wadingBird #birds #wildlife #nature #photography #thelittlethings #ECK 🕊️💙
A white Great Egret is standing along the shoreline of a lake. Tall green grasses in the foreground and blue water reflecting wispy clouds.
Interesting information:
The Great Egret Feature long necks, long legs, and dagger-like bills. They stand motionless or slowly stalk in shallow fresh or saltwater, waiting to strike fish, frogs, and other small aquatic prey with a sudden jab.
A tall, stately white wader of quiet waters. Common, especially in the south, it may wander far to the north in late summer. Nearly wiped out in the United States in the late 1800s, when its plumes were sought for use in fashion, the Great Egret made a comeback after early conservationists put a stop to the slaughter and protected its colonies; as a result, this bird became the symbol of the National Audubon Society.

some things are easy to avoid, others not as much. the more people become vegan, and avoid the main products of harm, the "food" items especially, of mutilated body parts and forced reproductive secretions, they will also stop appearing in small amounts in everything else...

the very standard practices of animal farming are torturous to sentient beings. animal farming is animal abuse. and it is totally unnecessary in today's modern societies. and is a leading cause of climate change, deforestation, pandemics, water shortage, antibiotic resistance, food shortage etc.
