Fought in extremely harsh conditions, this short but successful campaign prevented Germany from using vital ports and radio transmitters against British shipping. It was one of the earliest major victories for the Allies.

On June 23 1915 the Italians launch the first offensive on the Isonzo River. Spoiler: It will not be the last. The Italians enjoyed a 2:1 superiority in troops and gained some initial success. Repeated frontal assaults could not dislodge the Austro-Hungarians from strong uphill defensive positions.

Basil Rathbone, THE greatest Sherlock Holmes, served in WW1. He started as a Private in the London Scottish Regiment, ultimately serving as an Intelligence Officer for the King's Liverpool Regiment (Liverpool Scottish). Received the Military Cross in 1918. Became a legend in feature films and TV.

In 1916 Russia launched the largest offensive of WW1, and perhaps the most successful. Part of Allied strategy to pressure on all fronts. Moved it up to receive pressure on the German assault on Verdun. Over 1 million casualties on both sides. Austria-Hungary barely survived. #WW1 #FWW #GreatWar

There are (at least) 2 liberal responses to the Nowak murder: 1. No, there are no considerations of race in policing. 2. Yes there are considerations of race precisely because of the history of the police and racism. I worry we're going for the first, and the populists have liberals on the run.

Fully *one year later*, the Telegraph has been forced (by @ipso.co.uk) to admit that it was lying about foreign nationals claiming benefits.

An article “More than one million foreign nationals are receiving benefits”
(March 17, 2025) referred to the number of “foreign nationals” receiving
benefits, and gave the rate of benefit claims for various nationalities. In fact,
the particular DWP data on which the article was based recorded the
nationality of claimants when registering for a National Insurance number,
rather than the nationality at the time they were claiming benefits, so that
some claimants might have since acquired UK citizenship, and would not be
foreign nationals at the time they were claiming benefits. This correction has
been published following an upheld ruling by the Independent Press
Standards Organisation.
