Irlams o' th' Height had a female Station Master and a fully female compliment of staff. The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway hired many women during the war. They took on roles such as Station Master, porters, locomotive and carriage cleaners, and ticket collectors. #ww1 #WomensHistory #Railway

On 1st October 1918 the Egyptian Expeditionary Force captured Damascus. The 10th Australian Light Horse were the first unit to enter the city.

Admiral Reinhard Scheer born this day. Admiral of the Imperial German Navy and later Chief of Naval Staff. He led the German Navy at the Battle of Jutland. After the war accepted an invitation from Jellicoe to meet and discuss Jutland. He died before the trip. #WW1 #FWW #GreatWar #Germany #Jutland

Private Joseph Standing Buffalo, Canadian Infantry, was born in 3 June 1897 in Indian Head, Saskatchewan, son of Grand Chief Julius Standing Buffalo of the Fort Qu’Appelle Sioux Nation. He was killed in action on 29 September 1918. 📍 Bucquoy Road Cemetery 🇫🇷

Advice, please! My new book is a battalion history. The history itself, by the time I have added maps and index, is ~400 pages. Part 2 consists of biographies of every officer and will be ~200 pages. So ... produce as one heavy volume or two smaller, easier to handle volumes? Thoughts? #ww1 #book

Into the archive... Thrice decorated, wounded and promoted from the ranks, Captain Joseph Milne was one of the only men of the 2nd Battalion to serve from their first day of action at Gallipoli on the 25th April 1915, through to the end of the war on the 11th of November 1918.

The 'first' Second Battle of Ramadi was described by General Maude as "as clean and business-like a military operation as one could wish to see." Securing the Euphrates and denying supplies to the Ottoman Army, and accomplished in 24 hours.

Well it looks like I can’t escape the FWW even on holiday. Nice little perambulation down Val Gardena involved a disused railway. Turns out it was built in just 5 months by 8000 Russian POW in 1916. Lots of fascinating photos and info boards along the route

Lt Col Norman Teacher was mortally wounded during an attack near Zonnebeke. Faced with an impassable swamp, his battalion came under machine-gun fire at Hill 40 as they attempted to go around it, leaving them without the protection of the barrage. 📍Ypres Reservoir Cemetery 🇧🇪

On 25 September 1915, the British first used chlorine gas during the Battle of Loos. Intriguingly, the remains of Corporal Moon, London Irish Rifles, and several others were found in a trench still wearing their gas masks. 📍Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery 🇫🇷

Some 17,000 vehicles pass this memorial every day but very very few stop to read what it says. It's on the A36 at Woolverton (between Bath and Warminster). It commemorates Sgt Ken Holland RAF who was 20 yrs when he was shot down and killed on 25th Sep 1940 while attacking an HE111.

The subsea cables that were cut by CS (Cable Ship) Alert forced Germany to use radio transmissions which were easier to intercept. Couple this with the attacks on German Wireless Towers globally and their ability to communicate was severely hampered. #WW1 #WarHistory #Communications

Staff Serjeant Ernest Baker, Army Air Corps, was killed by a sniper while dug in outside the 1st British Airborne Division’s HQ at the Hartenstein Hotel. He was posthumously awarded the DFM for gallant and distinguished services in Normandy. 📍Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery 🇳🇱

Edward Morchonowicz served with the 1st Independent Polish Parachute Brigade and was killed during Operation Market Garden. For 78 years, his grave was marked as that of an Unknown Polish Soldier, until research finally identified him in 2022. 📍Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery 🇳🇱

Josef Jan Nickowski 1918-1944. Hideously burned on his way into battle when his Sherman hit mines. It’s now a memorial. He survived seven, agonising days, finally succumbing on the day that his countrymen entered the ruins of the abbey at Montecassino #Poland 🇵🇱 (marked by a cross in the group photo)

Letters from France to the UK took around two days, but between four to eight weeks to Australia. Mail went via the censors, over to UK, sorted, then loaded onto ships. Ships full of mail could be sunk, or otherwise lost, meaning agonising waits for loved ones at home #WW1 #WarHistory #ANZAC

L/Cpl Ernest Hookway was shot and killed after his harness became caught in a tree as he parachuted into Arnhem during Operation Market Garden. The 23-year-old from Barnstaple, North Devon, served with the Corps of Military Police. 📍Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery 🇳🇱

Private Daniel Barrow of the Newfoundland Regiment is buried a long way from home. Killed in action on this day in 1916, a little over a week later his mother received a very matter-of-fact telegram informing her of her son’s death. 📍Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery 🇧🇪
