How does Russia take out 20% of the United States’ most senior military leadership without firing a shot? By turning to the same man who is responsible for the destruction dozens of bases in the Middle East, the depletion of our arsenal, and hiding it all from the American people, Petrov Hegseth.

So, an interest-free short term loan from the government to run your campaign ads? While your Super PAC earns interest on the $20 million you stole? No. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/05/u...

Facing Backlash, Trump Says His Super PAC Will Pay for Taxpayer-Funded Ads
The president said that his PAC, MAGA, Inc., would pay for TV ads promoting him that had been paid for with taxpayer money.

Article 1 is Congress. The presidency comes second, in Article 2, and explicitly requires the president to faithfully execute the law as passed by Congress. But that structure implies that the president can break laws without consequence. Or, well, at least this one can. -Sam Alito, paraphrased

So he was check kiting. Making the government foot the bill while “his money” earned interest. Not to mention that millions already saw the ads carrying the backing of “the US government.”

It's been such a long few years, I'd forgotten this particular rape accusation against Hegseth. The woman told police she may have been drugged. Hegseth, who was married to one woman and had just had a baby with another, said it was consensual but paid her $50k to settle. He was confirmed anyway.

A hallmark of democratic backsliding is government leaders stealing from taxpayers and using public funds to try to get themselves electoral advantages. Backsliding countries keep the form of elections, but corrupt leaders render them no longer free and fair by putting a state thumb on the scale.

Noem demanded personal control over all DHS contracts over $100K and should be held responsible for the waste and (likely) graft that followed, which conservatively ran into the hundreds of millions. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/governing-...
From what we know of Kristi Noem, the head of DHS at the time, she was focused on micromanaging some aspects of government operations. Not workforce planning, but — you guessed it — the flow of grants and contracts. Any contract worth more than $100,000 had to be personally signed by her. And some of that spending was pretty questionable, such as a $200 million ad campaign prominently featuring Noem. There was no competitive bidding process and Noem directed money to Republican firms with long-term personal and professional ties to her. (The fact that Noem had previously led a “Meth: We’re On It” campaign did not seem to stop anyone from questioning her public relations skills).

DHS also bought 11 empty warehouses that it said would serve as detention centers, overpaid for them, and has since sold seven of them. Apparently Noem told officials to buy the warehouses within 30 days, leading to a rushed acquisition process. After the DHS spent nearly $500 million via no-bid contracts on 10 jets, officially for deportations, the planes are mostly unused, or reserved to ferry Trump officials around. So more likely to be incompetence than corruption in this case.

The extent to which the rule "you are not allowed to insult the other side's voters" is applied exclusively to the left never ceases to infuriate me. "Basket of deplorables" and "cling to guns or religion" were WEEKS-long news cycles. There were panels. There was theme music and a logo.

On second look, it’s not clear this one went through the hotel room wall and hit someone in the next room. But that happens a lot. Nervous gun owners traveling with their weapons, and fidgeting with them in their downtime.

I’m also struck by the idea of a “lifelong Democrat” voting Trump in 2024, versus any of the other times. And based on the idea that “we” had to “try something different.” Like, more different than a black woman for president? When the other guy had literally already been president?

David Waldman @kagrox.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I can never quite figure out whether these “lifelong Democrats” turn out not to be what they say because they’re lying and no one checks, or because it’s just another scramble-brained #medianvoter, wanting a realistic down-to-earth show that's completely off the wall and swarming with magic robots.
