“Our government must act and clearly spell out where that line is, for Canadians and Americans alike. Passivity implies a kind of resigned consent, and this is not something we can afford. And if the government fails to act … Canadians must step in.”

Just learned that the NSERC Discovery submission portal character count includes "returns"/"enters"... but Word's character count (with spaces) does not... I mean it's good that I found out now with time before the deadline... but, now I have to try to find those characters somewhere.

Happy to see our latest paper out. Led by Rachel Searston, we investigated whether participants could accurately verify identity from non-overlapping face fragments. Across 3 pre-registered experiments, we show above chance performance in our novel "spotlight" task. link.springer.com/article/10.3...

Across 2 experiments, while we found no benefit of context in facilitating spontaneous recognition for Tyler. This was true even after participants saw an image of of Matt LeBlanc (Joey on Friends) before the image of Tyler. We discuss theoretical implications for these findings in the GD (6/n)

Thus, participants rated the faces on a grey background, a generic coffee shop background, the Central Perk Set from Friends, and the Central Perk Set which also had the main cast members from Friends. (5/n)

Unbeknownst to participants within the set of faces that they were rating was James Michael Tyler (Gunther on Friends). Each facial identity was rated 4 times, in 4 blocks, wherein the background on which the facial images provided more context to cue participants to the presence of Tyler. (4/n)

To do this, we had participants rate the trustworthiness of faces, and asked participants to only rate the faces that were unfamiliar. If they were instructed to select a "Familiar to me" option. (3/n)

We were interested in the spontaneous recognition of familiar faces when these faces were wholly unexpected! Specifically, we examined whether context cues (e.g., increasingly informative backgrounds; the presence of another highly familiar face would facilitate spontaneous recognition). (2/n)
