In a new paper (with @kayritchie.bsky.social, Eilidh Noyes, Carl Bunce and Josh Davis) we investigated AI-face detection in super-recognisers and typical-ability participants, both with and without a short training procedure. See the link below for the results! doi.org/10.1098/rsos...

Hear me out. Who was the first dude on the podium at the Euros final there? Was it Tom Cruise in a Mission: Impossible mask? And if you’re saying no, are you sure? The face, the eyes, and the hands don’t match the face.

Here’s my opinion - let’s stop saying a piece of work is from someone’s (the most well-known person’s) lab. Let’s credit the first author even if we haven’t already heard of them. How do PhD students and postdoc and other ECRs get known if we erase their names from discussions of their own papers?

What an absolutely brilliant concert with Stamford Chamber Orchestra! Mozart narrated a ‘children’s guide’ piece written specially for us by John Sturt, complete with kiddo violins & singers. Jupiter symphony was genuinely one of the best things I’ve played in a while - well done everyone!
A selfie of over-excited oboe and flute players with an actor dressed as Mozart in full wig and fancy coat.

ITV commentary once again is totally unhinged - there’s clearly a bet on as to who can say the word “wardrobe” the most. “He is a nicely built, nicely aging French wardrobe”. Mad. Also strong choice from Twickenham to choose ‘Chumbaleze’ for their hanging around music. #EngFra #SixNations

We were just talking about this yesterday in the context of truth and facts. Who gets to decide that a piece of evidence is not ‘real’ or a fact? Peer reviewers and an editor. Thats a bit scary.

Earlier this year, Nature asked science-policy specialists which country is particularly good at ensuring science is factored into government decisions. The question mystified many respondents. Some of the responses were: “Not aware of any.” “None have enviable systems.” “Very hard to say.”

Advising governments about science is essential but difficult. So train people to do it
A great scientist doesn’t necessarily make an effective science adviser — but schooling and practice can help to bridge the gap.

Here's a quick analog #VisionScience demo for your pre-Thanksgiving Wednesday: Instant binocular rivalry with crayons. Get yourself Crayola's "Scarlet" and "Yellow-Green" and draw overlapping shapes that are distinct from one another. Put on some red-green glasses watch 'em alternate!
A sheet of white paper with a red circle and green 'X' drawn on top of one another in the middle of the age. The red and green crayons used to draw these shapes are at upper-left, and red-green anaglyph glasses sit on top of the page at the lower-right. A box of Crayola crayons is in the upper-right of the image.
