Thanks! It was standing on top of the barbecue outside my kitchen window. I couldn't figure out why it was there, but it stayed long enough for me to grab my camera. Then it dropped between the bbq and the wall, grabbed its victim, and flew up to this spot. The dove was still twitching.

This is a head-on photograph of a juvenile red-tailed hawk standing on top of a dead or dying dove in my backyard in Los Angeles. It knocked the dove out of the sky, and then perched on my barbecue waiting for the dove to stop moving. Then it flew down to the ground, grabbed the dove, and transported it to a clearing under my jacaranda tree. It then began to tear it apart and eat it.

A pair of Canada Geese are silhouetted against the morning mist at Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve in January, 2021. The picture was taken five months after a Labor Day Weekend fire burned about 90% of the vegetation in the Reserve, including the reeds that surrounded the pond. The birds (egrets, geese, cormorants, redtail hawks, turkey vultures, etc.) returned quickly, as their food supply in the pond and the creek and the burrows did not burn up.

Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Herons&Egrets Shot at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve in Los Angeles. They like to fly up to the high branches at sunrise to get warm, then it's just a matter of waiting until they take off again.

The Mississippi River was the superhighway of the central US. North-South traffic carried freight and people, and some of the cities were the jumping-off points for wagon trains to the west. We're going to photograph the old towns and landscapes, lingering long enough for the good light.
