This is a head-on photograph of a juvenile red-tailed hawk standing on top of a dead or dying dove in my backyard in Los Angeles. It knocked the dove out of the sky, and then perched on my barbecue waiting for the dove to stop moving. Then it flew down to the ground, grabbed the dove, and transported it to a clearing under my jacaranda tree. It then began to tear it apart and eat it.

The bird has a large, bright red hooked bill, gray head with a golden iris, brown body with speckled belly, and a dark tail about equal to its body. It is perched on a dead tree branch.

About fifteen blackbirds are resting in the bare branches of a tree. The background is a deep blue sky, punctuated by a nearly full Moon rising in the East. A single blackbird, on the tallest branch, is completely encircled by the Moon, creating an even starker contrast between the light and shadow. The bird is looking down, as if to warn or apologize for something it has just dropped.

#BirdOfTheDay is #CaptionThatBird "Air Canada 2165, SBWR to ACBP, Runway 26L, cleared for takeoff." @atlanticbirding.bsky.social #wildlifephotography #photography @sfvaudubon.bsky.social
Photographed at Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve in February 2024. A light gray mist hung over the pond, which is not the condition I prefer. I like a thick fog at sunrise or crystal clear with big puffy clouds. Still, there were birds doing bird things, and the take off of this Canada Goose reminded me of looking down the runway at a departing jet. The splashing in the water is reminiscent of the trail of turbulent heat left in the wake of a big jet. And "SBWR" stands for Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve, and "ACBP" is Anthony C. Beilenson Park, about one-half mile away which also has a big pond and lots of birds.

The Southern Ground-Hornbill, photographed in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. The body is black and shiny, with a black hornbill, but the face and neck are bright red, and the eye is black with a yellow iris with pronounced eyelashes. Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is: #Silhoutte A pair of Canada Geese at sunrise in Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve, Los Angeles. This was taken five months after a fire denuded 90% of the reserve. @atlanticbirding.bsky.social #wildlifephotography #photography #audubon
A pair of Canada Geese are silhouetted against the morning mist at Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve in January, 2021. The picture was taken five months after a Labor Day Weekend fire burned about 90% of the vegetation in the Reserve, including the reeds that surrounded the pond. The birds (egrets, geese, cormorants, redtail hawks, turkey vultures, etc.) returned quickly, as their food supply in the pond and the creek and the burrows did not burn up.

This is from the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve in Los Angeles. The water is supplied by a sewage reclamation plant, and the location is within 1/2 mile of one of the busiest freeway exchanges in the world. But when it's cold and the fog is rising, it could be anywhere.

Early morning in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia. During our Kenya safari (in 2022) we saw fresh kills, vultures, and bones by the side of the road. On this trip there were almost none of them. The antelope and antelope-adjacent animals were living in paradise. #wildlifephotography #photography

Today my brother John would have been 62 years old. He died in April 2022. Since he passed I have published a book of my old photographs of him and our family called "The Johnny Chronicles." And I have two solo shows of the images in the next few months, in Fresno and Los Angeles. 1/2
This is a vertical black and white photograph that was taken in 1973. The subject is my brother John Doherty, who was born with Down Syndrome in 1964. John is standing in his rain boots on an oil-stained driveway, holding a plastic screwdriver, with his hands hitching up his belt. He is looking directly into the camera, his face and shirt dirty from whatever he was doing before I took the photograph.
