I set myself on getting my effects settled, moving my luggage from the pantry where Amy Rivière and I had left them into the unoccupied guest room in the back of the ground floor. In one of my last telephone conversations with Marianne in the weeks before she died, she asked me what I would require in a space I inhabited. Based on that phone call, I could see she had meticulously arranged the room precisely according to my minimalistic preferences. Heavy curtains in a rich burgundy to keep the sun out, a desk I could work at with an accompanying comfortable chair, bed, and best of all, bookshelves. Lovely, empty bookshelves in a rich, dark oak, begging to be adorned with literary treasures. All objects that scream ‘comfort’ to some piece deep within me. Occasionally, I wonder if time should diminish my yearning for material possessions, rendering their comfort fleeting and insignificant. Yet, instead of fading, these possessions served as an anchor, grounding me in the realm of existence. Of course, I could relinquish many of them without difficulty, as evident by the remnants of my abandoned flat. However, without fail, I found myself occupied with filling a new abode with distractions, succumbing once more to the magnetic allure of material comfort.
