"Unsettles" is an interesting word choice to see, as one of the full soft money researchers who will likely be out of work within the next year as a direct result of these changes.

Heartbreaking and infuriating. We are facing a future of cascading system failures. It will be bad, but it will be even worse if we do nothing.

Got a text from CVS yesterday that the updated COVID vaccine is available soon in my area. Booked an appointment to get that and a flu shot this Friday. All the cool kids are doing it!

There are 64 ready to run right now. All of that in two days is likely not possible. If I can get half of those, I'll be happy. 2/3, I'll be thrilled.

Dolly Parton knew what it was like to struggle as she fought for working families her whole career. From providing free books to kids to giving working women our "9 to 5" anthem, she was an icon and an inspiration. Rest in power to our union sister. We will always love you.

Okay, B2 flyovers are cool, but I kinda want that taxpayer money going into repairing the roads around the DC area instead. There's still some pretty significant damage from the ice storm in January and we're forced to either weave around giant potholes or risk destroying our cars.

NSF proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2027 is a little over $4.8 billion. That's a VERY steep cut that the scientific community is not able to absorb so abruptly.

I don’t think anyone is ready for the storm of neurodivergent rage that is brewing. We have a whole class of people we’ve trained to analyze systems and use that knowledge to make things happen, and you’re going to take away their pipettes and mass specs? They’re 100% intrinsically motivated.

If things get really desperate, we've been told we can access the working DI lines in two other wings. That doesn't answer the question of how we supply a clean room from an external DI source without contaminating the shit out of everything, but maybe there's a creative solution in there.

Will there be hoarding of ultrapure water? (Well, we already do that like raccoons at our stations, so yes.) Duels? Outright anarchy? Time will tell. My job in there is just to get my work done and keep the students happy and the place relatively clean.

Dr Val Finlayson @justsomeisotope.bsky.social · 13/08/2026

The one-day planned outage of the DI water line supplying the wing of my work building has ballooned into an 8-day (for now) outage. Things in the isotope lab may be about to get interesting, seeing as we rely heavily on ultrapure water systems that need that DI line and our reserve is getting low.
