He glanced down. Didn’t like it and snapped his eyes closed. But he had to look so, despite every part of his brain and eyes complaining that this was for the best, forced his eyes open again to find Doddering holding on to his foot, which certainly wasn’t helping the situation.

“We seem to have a bit of a problem.” Doddering’s feet swung beneath him as he tried to maintain his grip.

“Can you reach a foothold?”

“No. You?”

“No. Sorry.” A noise suddenly made Myld want to rush this conversation onward. “I wonder, could you do the decent thing and let go? Only, I think the corpse’s arms can’t stand to hold us both for much longer.”

“I’d rather not, actually.” The sound of tearing flesh drifted down, making both of them wish they’d settled their estates before heading out that morning. “I’m not a bad man, you know. Misunderstood, really.”

“No. You are a bad man. Everybody understands you perfectly.” A sudden drop, another tear and Myld wished he’d told his mother he still loved her.
