A resource I hadn't come across (but based on the excellent Defence of Britain data - which recorded civil defence and anti-invasion structures from both World Wars), an interactive map of the data maintained by Steve Thompson. (to whom many thanks!):

One of my favorite rhetorical and analytical moves is joining things (showing that different, seemingly unrelated ideas are part of the same phenomenon) and taking them apart (resolving paradoxes by demonstrating that what appears like a contradictory thing is different things, lumped together). 1/
A collage made of architectural features from 'Variae Architecturae Formae' (1636), a collection of engravings. The architectural arches, buildings, fountains, etc, are layered atop each other and placed around each other to create an infinite, recombinant built environment.

Thanks! I vibe coded a script that used the Claude LLM to identify places first using a gazetteer of London parishes, derived from Morgan's map (as per @layersoflondon) , and OpenStreetMap for places outside of the the City. Works impressively well!

Using Claude's older, cheaper, more efficient Haiku 4.5 model via a batch API, my script is successfully identifying and geocoding place names like "Lewys in the Countie of Sussex", "the parishe of Berkinge next adioyning to the tower" and even "Wiscome in Somerso sire". Game well and truly changed!

I've used Claude to vibe code an interface to view the annotated transcriptions, which feels like a game changer in quickly reading the will. I've also been experimenting with resource efficient ways to enhance the annotation of places in the transcriptions, which wasn't a major focus of the project

Fascinating! But afraid I can't really add anything much. Not something I've seen before, but then as I say can probably count on my fingers the number of non-enrolled copies of property documents I've worked with ...

I'm much more used to property transactions in Husting rolls / company cartularies etc than original indentures, I'm afraid. Is it that this is explicitly an English *copy*, but also chirographed?

Justin Colson @justincolson.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
Thanks Tracey! I'll be interested in what you make of it. It feels difficult to attempt a top-down survey of a topic like the Companies which everyone tends to work on from the individual company and its archive!

Richard Gresham's attempt to use rank within Livery Companies as a proxy for tax assessment was a one-off failure for this reason. Rank within a company (in the earlier C16th) said far more about the structure and capital requirements of different trades than it did about wealth or wider status

Justin Colson @justincolson.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
I also quantify the numbers of liverymen across the companies, and chart change over the sixteenth century. I argue that the way that London's guilds understood status and hierarchy was far more complex than the categories that we, or indeed the Tudor state, tried to box them into.

Not reassured by the drift in scholarship on History / "AI" towards, in effect, 'hey this is your little buddy historian who will do little tasky-waskies for you'. Case in point see the TOC of this latest elements entry. 'Problems' are then discussed inside this framework, which minimises them.

W towers of parish churches of Boston (1420s-1510s), St Michael Coventry (1370s-1440s) and Cirencester (1400s-20s). Latter was built with squinches to take an octagonal stage/spire but was aborted after they had to put massive flyers through the aisles to stop the W side falling apart from thrust.
Boston ("the stump", three square storeys topped with an flyer-buttressed "lantern" octagon), Coventry (the bombed-out church which had been made a cathedral in 1918, four square stories carrying a flyer-buttressed octagon with a spire) and Cirencester (model from Youtube user CotswoldDrone, articulated as three stories, although the middle storey could be argued as two)
