I’m not sure America has ever been all that serious a country. It’s like our ideals. Something we aspire towards rather than something we have achieved. Pretty sure a hundred years ago many other nations didn’t consider us all that serious a country. We were even viewed as a bit backwards.

The 90s could be summed up as the decade that began with OK Soda and ended with enutrition trying to push epills down your craw. (Source.)
The majority of the ad is yellow text against a green background: "Time is against you. Gravity is against you. Genetics are against you. But, hey, have a great day." Below it reads: "Log on to enutrition.com and discover 288 Weigh tmanagement products, 1934 natural remedies, plus thousands of other health and nutrition supplements. All delivered directly to your door. Enter the following location code during step 2 of the checkout process and save $5 on your order. 1FPGD" The bottom right has the logo and slogan, with the logo made to look like a search bar: "Enutrition.com: your source for healthy living."

551. A fantastic and imaginative take on space opera, with some brilliant worldbuilding and really cool ideas about gender and consciousness and the nature of intelligence. Kind of purposefully breaks down your conception of the gender binary, which is very cool, even if the ending is a little weak.

One consequences of the left's hostility to economics is that they rally behind solutions that will probably make things worse. Economics is not the enemy of the left, and hasn't been for nearly half a century

Hot take: I don't think social media made people dumber. We've been dumb this whole time. It's just that you used to have to have a job that people sent their dumb letters to, to notice. This made "Engaging with fools" an occupational hazard rather than the 24/7 experience it is presently.

The PNW has all sorts of amazing examples of WPA arts and crafts, most dramatically present at the majestic Timberline Lodge. I’ve always had mixed feelings about government funded art and the complexities are thoughtfully discussed in this great book I bought recently at a discount.

I’m on the fence tbh. My point is that I am not sure the experiments showing introspection or consciousness are showing either of those as long as there are unanswered alternative (simpler) hypotheses. Parsimony should be our guiding principle. Consciousness is not the simplest explanation

our laziness is what allows us as humans to say no, and this helps us push back against complexity @bcantrill.bsky.social #monktoberfest
A slide that says:

The virtue of laziness
• Our need to comprehend and compose systems drives us towards developing simple, powerful abstractions
• This is our drive to cognitive efficiency in a system - what Larry Wall famously called the programmer virtue of laziness
• LLMs lack the virtue of laziness - they are biased to the complex
• Moreover, their limited context makes them tautologically emergent..
