This is an Eastern Roman triumphal inscription celebrating in Greek a local victory on land _and_ sea over the Langobards. I cannot emphasize enough how extremely rare such a text is, not only because of its location, but just as a document illuminating a very obscure period in history.

Just read a Wikipedia entry for an artist and was trying to imagine the working class backgrounded version. ‘Showed great promise with art at school, but had to get a job at Aviva, worked their way up to team leader over 25 years, got made redundant, worked for a charity for 15 years.

One of the big issues for the Canadian War Graves Detachment in 1919-1920 was family requests to repatriate bodies. Imperial policy said bodies could not be removed from cemeteries in France. Canadians generally abided by this policy, but it got tricky because so many Americans died serving Canada.

One of my all-time favorite rules, from Pea Ridge (1980). The designer's great-great-grandfather fought in the battle, and if his unit takes damage you roll a die to see if he survives. If he dies, the designer is never born, and the game doesn't exist, and so automatically ends in a draw.
