A moment from this past summer: then & now at Madeleine Farm in the Meuse region of France & scene of fierce fighting during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. Madeleine Farm remains an active farm today. It is surrounded by memories & stories of soldiers whose fates brought them near it a century ago.

1/3 🧵Is the 1932 colourized image of Cpl Eugene McInnis of US Tank Corps? Jun 27 1919, Seattle Star published a portrait of a blind man, Eugene A. McInnis, that looks very similar to 1932 image. He is holding a sign indicating he is blind as well as taking part in July 1932 Bonus March on Washington

"'World War veteran, Bonus Expeditionary Force.' Scene from the 'Bonus March' on Washington, when thousands of veterans converged on the capital in 1932 to demand cash redemption of their WWI service certificates, a bonus that wasn't supposed to be paid until 1945. Harris & Ewing glass negative"

"Then came the scream of a high-explosive shell, the deafening crash as it hurled itself against the walls of the tank, and the occupants were thrown gasping and senseless to the floor, blood streaming from nose and ears, the young corporal totally blinded, the lieutenant with one eye shot away. The tank took a few awkward lunges forward, wabbled a bit and then stopped dead. The corporal in the tank was Corporal Eugene A. McInnis, of Seattle. Today he has the physique of a Greek wrestler, but he is totally blind, he will never see again, yet he is "carrying on," cheerfully and manfully, with never a kick or a grumble at Fate's hard knocks. "Lots of them are worse off than I am," he explains... In January, 1918, they landed in France. Soon after his arrival in the war-stricken country the lure of the tanks got into his blood, the excitement of independent action caused him to transfer to the 327th Tank Battalion...He was three days "in" and on the third day, his tank a mile ahead of the infantry cleaning up machine gun nests and preparing the way for the American advance, the H. E. struck his "boat.""The last thing I saw that day were bodies of two Yanks lying on the parapet of a trench and just below them in the trench, the bodies of three Germans," McInnis said. "After that I woke up in the hospital—one of the blinks."Corporal McInnis has been attending the Red Cross Institute for the Blind at Baltimore since his discharge from the army. He has been released for the summer to visit his parents at 3 Highland Drive ave. In September he will return to the institute. He is 24 years old.In spite of his most terrible of afflictions he remains cheerful. He does not grow sentimental over his sacrifice of sight. He explains simply, "I only did my bit."

A short article written for the Doughboy Foundation brought us into contact and friendship with Alfons Philippi, the German gentleman in the middle.

Alfons joined us for our American 42nd Division walk, as his own grandfather fought the Doughboys here and was captured at Côte de Chàtillon.

The internet can still be a wonderful source for good, as it brought us together to share in the history and memories of these old battlefields as friends.
