A pair of painted lady butterflies took a long lunch in my garden on their way south yesterday.
A butterfly with mottled orange, brown and white markings (some outlined in white) and circular eyespots on the underside of its lower wings, sips nectar from numerous tiny pink flowers clustered on a flat blossom head.

The migration has begun. A ruby-throated #hummingbird was darting between these scarlet runner beans and red bee balm blooms in my garden this morning. Their ability to remember and return to the same flower patch year after year along their long journey south is astonishing! #blooms

As an amateur birder, I felt lucky to record and identify the call of this dickcissel bird yesterday evening near the Oldman River, after hearing that experienced birders were seeking it in the area. Apparently, a rare sighting here. #Merlin app is great! #birds #Merlinapp #nature

If you’re out early in the morning, you might discover our native evening primrose (Oenothera caespitosa) blooming on dry prairie slopes. This beauty unrolls its large flowers at twilight, luring pollinator moths in with a lovely scent. Each blossom lasts only one night. #nativeplants #wildflower

Best (and easiest) time to sow your native plants for pollinators is in fall, but there’s still time to successfully germinate your seeds if you set them outdoors in containers this month. Learn how from the free handout on my website. www.juneflanagan.ca/newsevents/

Cherry blossom! There's a twig heavy with flowers and buds against a grey background. The shapes of more blossoms are outlined in darker pinks, mixed in. This is two photos mixed together to add a touch of abstraction and some interesting texture. As always, it's an exercise in composition...

Difficult to describe in detail, but this is a macro photo of ice crystals on the outside of a Minneapolis window, taken from the inside.

Each unique feathery crystal is picked out in tiny, ice-white, blade-like extensions to central branches - like glass ferns in a winter landscape.
