A close up image of a rectangular serving of Japanese style toffee bread - a slice of Shokupan loaf coated in honey and butter and baked giving a golden toffee coating, wrapping a soft white brioche style bread.

Absolutely delicious treat courtesy of the Devecchio small batch bakery in Norwich, Norfolk, England. Baked on the premises, situated in The Lanes is Norwich; there's always a queue outside, and they sell out quickly!

Adding my personal discovery . . . I added a small puddle of balsamic vinegar in which to dip the toffee bread. Chef’s kiss!

An interesting view of a #residential building in #Tirana, #Albania. #blueskyartshow #undulating #eastcoastkin #photographersofbluesky #photography #urban #architecture #balconies #flora
A ground-based, near proximity, upward view of a light rose sand-coloured residential building against a blue sky in Tirana, Albania.

What looks like a standard geometric building wrapped in ribbons, are actually the continuation of the upright walls of balconies wrapping the building in undulating horizontal waves from balcony to balcony, subtly supported in a way that make them appear free-floating.

Many of the balconies are draped with cascading greenery which contrasts with the exposed, curving architecture.

#stunday #ECK #blueskyart #photographersofbluesky #architecture #Spain #SantiagodeCompostela #stairways #museodepobogalego Two perspectives of a triple spiral stairway. Having never encountered such before, nor since, it is still a marvel to me. See ALT for more
A color portrait shot across a triple helical granite staircase with wrought iron spindle balustrades. Located in the former convent of San Domingos de Bonaval - it’s now the Museo do Pobo Galego in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

Designed by the architect Domingo de Andrade around the turn of the 17-18th century, it is both a perplexing and stunning geometrical construction, and a great example of Spanish Baroque architecture.

Like a DNA helix, two staircases spiral above another. Honeyed brown, paneled doors in white walls, lead off from the different staircases onto separate floors, into rooms and corridors beyond.

Looking a little like an M C Escher creation, at first glance the viewer is forced to fathom the structure and reality.A view upwards from beneath the triple helical staircase.

In the center of the image is the bright white at the top of the staircase where sunlight comes in through windows.

Circling around that light-well in expanding swirls down toward the viewer are the undersides of the staircases - marked by rectangular brick shapes. Rising perpendicularly from each staircase are the black spindled balustrades to guide the hands of those who ascend or descend this marvel of architecture.

The artificial lighting at the bottom of the stairwell casts a golden glow up onto the undersides of the staircases.

#firstlove #warrior #survivor #mother #inspiration #family #ECK #bluesky Tomorrow, my mother would have been 97 years old. Surviving great challenges that could have destroyed her, she will always be the greatest example to me of ‘reaching the end of the rope, tying a knot, and hanging on’. ALT
A black and white, head and shoulders portrait image of my young mother with her dark hair and smiling eyes. She’s wearing a dark top and a double-row pearl choker resting at the edge of her crew-neck collar.
********

She passed away during covid but, with already existing late effect lung cancer, that was not listed on her death certificate.

Isolated away from her family, on the other side of the planet from me, I said my goodbyes through a screen - grateful for that opportunity at least. A soft-focus, colored, head and shoulders portrait image, against an ombre sable background - my mother sits for her daughter’s sudden desire to capture a moment in 1983.

Her hair, now grey, is neatly coiffed, and a hint of a smile plays around the corners of her mouth. She feels a little self-conscious.

A small gold hoop earring is silhouetted beneath her left ear; and she wears a cream, tie-neck sweater, as she looks into the light coming from the left of the photo, providing lovely highlights and shadows.

*********
So much has happened in the ensuing 7 years since her passing; I so desperately needed to talk with her.

But something in my heart still lets me feel that she was, in some way, aware, and I took comfort in that.

A macro shot of water bubbles trapped under the thinnest layer of ice on a street.

The top third of the narrow portrait frame is of the mid- to dark red browns of the edge of the road beneath a glistening February glazing.

The rest of the image is full of hundreds of asymmetric bubbles, of many sizes, trapped in space by the totally transparent ice. They look so fragile that a breath of air would disperse them to the perimeter of the image, revealing the road below.

The #Baroque Royal Cabinet of Mathematical and Physical Instruments - only a portion of the restored Dresden Zwinger #Stunday #blueskyart #photographersofbluesky #royalpalaces #Zwinger #Dresden #Saxony #Germany #preservinghistory #reflections See ALT for more information
On the last evening of a recent 3-month stay across the street from the Dresden Zwinger, I stopped procrastinating and popped over for some evening shots.

The Zwinger is a former royal palace surrounding an open area that once hosted grand parades and celebrations, but very recently was restored to an orangery, as it had also been in former times.

The Zwinger museums house world-class collections of porcelain, fine art, and mathematical and physical [science] instruments.
A bit underexposed, this tight image is of the Cabinet–as they’re called–of the latter.

The orangery includes four fountains which - when turned off in the evening - become marvelous reflecting pools. This image was captured across one of them.

This building is a grand Baroque structure on four levels. The lowest bears a veranda, lined by an open, pillared stone balustrade, that runs the length of the building, and leads to a majestic staircase down into the orangery with the fountains (the pool of only one of which is partially viewable in the whole lower half of this image). On the veranda balustrade there are sculptural pedestals and putti [cherubs].

The second level [which extends longer than the third level] and the third, are walls of multi-paned ground to ceiling arched windows between colonnades.

On the uppermost floor is the Bogengalarie exhibition space within the curved ramparts.

Before full sunset, there are luminous highlights to the scattered small white clouds in a pale blue-grey sky. Sky and palace building are almost perfectly reflected in the pool below.

At midline of the image, a groomed lawn follows the concrete geometric edge of the pool, and along which 6 of the new citrus trees in black and white striped planters, can be seen.

3/3 on the theme of #growing – from 3 different viewpoints – for Saturday’s #blueskyartshow #eastcoastkin #macrophotography #photographersofbluesky #decay #rust #abandoned #abstract #LaPaz #BCS #Mexico #texture #remnant #erosion See ALT for more
Going perhaps in the other direction of thought - yet still ‘growing’ - is this close-up, abstract photo of a mid-light blue decorative metal railing on a boundary wall of a beach-front hotel–long abandoned–in La Paz, BCS, Mexico.

Exposure to the salty spray, sun and heat has taken a toll, and erosion has detached it from the wall. The jagged lower edge of the support pole is now a good two inches above the wall - which still bears an attachment anchor for the railing.

There is rust where 90°lateral bars and 45° diagonal struts were welded into the decorative design. At some point, barbed wire was wrapped around the pole where the diagonal struts intersect the 90° angle. The rust beneath the barbs, and the peeling paint, give an impression of the wire choking the railing. It’s not alive. The decay is growing.

Like a reptile shedding its skin as it grows, this close-up photo of a birch tree shows the inner, live, healthy bark on the trunk revealed in an opening through the naturally peeling-back of multiple dead layers of beige, oatmeal, light brown, and greyed-white bark.

In the background, behind the tree, we see slivers of residential buildings and a vehicle, and a bit of lawn beside a grey road just visible either side of the tree, along the horizontal bottom quarter of the image.

Beyond the first thought of plants, animals and humans, when I think of the theme of ‘growing’ I think of the pollinators - without whom the first three would die.

This macro image taken some years ago in the back garden, shows a bee - I don’t know which type - in the center of the photo against a blurred-out dark background, feeding at a backlit cornflower blue blossom of a borage plant.

The bee is intent on the task of collecting nectar, as it hangs vertically from the drooping blossom. Its wings are still and their tracery is picked out in a light golden brown by the afternoon sun coming from top right of the image - down through the petals of the blossom; their transparency revealing the bee’s amber abdomen band. The head, thorax, abdomen, and legs are hairy - those additional sticky traps of pollen that help continue plant diversity on the planet, and the growing of food to sustain all life.

A fun thing that caught my attention - the hairiness of the bee matches the seeming ‘hairiness’ of the borage plant’s pink stem - but by contrast, those on the plant are prickly and annoying if they get stuck in your skin.

The difference a handful of hours can make, from the dry heat of the day to the heat (but cooler) of the night. #Scape #blueskyart #eastcoastkin #landscape #skyscape #LaPaz #BCS #photographersofbluesky #sunset See ALT for description
Perhaps not taken on the same day as the baked and cracked image posted before this photo, but also not many streets or days away, either.

Split horizontally, almost in half, this late evening photo in La Paz, BCS, Mexico looks deceptively cooler [temperature] than it was.

The lower half is almost completely dark, although on the right, the hospitable glow of light is discernible through a decorative breeze-block wall: a neighbor’s backyard space - popular for all-night festivities and mariachi celebrations. To the right of it, and just above, a glowing window picks out a point of light in another house near the edge of the photo.

Above the nigh-shadowed mass of neighbors’ homes and walls, is a sharp skyline of flat rooftops and palm trees. Here and there, a lighted window, or street lamp glows.

However, it’s the sky above that makes this photo what it is: the remnants of sunset glow cream-to-sand-to-orange from the left of the image to where it meets the swirling darkness of the night sky clouds in the deeper duskier slate blue of the sky on the right.

Hot. Baked. Cracked. #Scape #blueskyart #eastcoastkin #landscape #LaPaz #BCS #photographersofbluesky #nature See Alt for description
The lower half of this image is a wracked, other-worldly planet. The brown land is cut with deep fissures and crevasses. The brown mountains are cracked along the ridges. What vegetation there is, at the bottom edge of the image, is dehydrated and spare.

There is no moisture. No water.

As we raise our gaze toward the upper half of the image, we see that the barren and desolate landscape is now tiny in comparison to the rest of the street upon which we see this ‘other-worldly’ place exists; here under the high blazing sun, surrounded by its glowing aura, in a bright blue sky at the top of the image. The sun furnace hangs above distant blurred edges of buildings, a vehicle and palm trees. Electrical power lines criss-cross the air above the dusty, baked street.

This ‘other world’ had been a muddy puddle in La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico - before the summer fully arrived.

A view on a sunny day, taken within the forest on Mt Tabor, Portland, Oregon - an extinct volcanic cinder cone.

The POV and vanishing point looks directly through an almost symmetrical aisle between giant trees reaching for the sky, like the aisle of a grand cathedral.

The forest floor is caramel with decayed needles, glowing warm in the setting sun, providing tree shadows of contrast. Small areas of green blades of grass push through the carpet of needles.

For this poster, this has truly felt a spiritual place.

A view looking across a snow-covered slope running diagonally from almost mid-point on the left of the image to near the bottom left corner.

The white field is open before the viewer until it reaches the edge of the coniferous forest, tall and majestic, with its sweeping snow-laden boughs reaching earthward.

What interested me in particular is the evidence of wind direction that had blown against the forest a few days before. The dark curves of the trunks are now exposed by the melting process - leaving them to flank vertical snowy stripes up the center of the towering trunks. The thought ‘pinstriped’ came to mind.

This black and white view from a trip between Germany and the Netherlands captures a frozen landscape.

In the lower quarter (nearest the viewer) is the dark shadow of the moving train through the landscape.

Next beyond the shadow we see hoar-frosted grass leading away towards glowing white frozen woods. All the ice-encrusted branches and twigs contrast against the dark vertical trunks.

The upper third of the image is of a bright-but-with-clouds sky. [The color version is a piercing bright day!]

In the distance–directly opposite the viewer–on the horizon behind the landscape, is a gigantic, white, branching electricity pylon - an echo of the frozen trees between it and the viewer. The pylon's dark power lines reach above and over the woods and the train, connecting the viewer to the horizon.

N O T F O R G O T T E N Maxine Noel Indigenous Art of Canada🇨🇦
"NOT FORGOTTEN"
- Maxine Noel

"Our mothers and daughters, our sisters and aunties and grandmothers. Our women are our heart and our spirit, always honoured, never forgotten. I am Dakota Sioux, a woman and mother, and an artist. These are inseparable facets of who I am and how I live in the world. That world, the world we all live and move in, is a place of great and terrible beauty, of wonder, and of tragedy. In this painting I speak to that wonder and beauty and tragedy.

To capture both the wonders and the tragedy, I wanted to include motifs which connect with all the places our people live. Turning first to the West Coast peoples, I am honoured to have been allowed to include the moon image of my friend, artist and visionary Roy Henry Vickers [..] From the North, I incorporated the image of Sedna, the source of all the creatures of the sea. I have always been drawn to the shell and bead work of the Maliseet and other East Coast peoples and in this painting have echoed the fluidity and grace of their compelling designs. And then, the two feathers, acknowledging the Metis, and the peoples of the grasslands and woodlands, of the plains and the forests. Finally, the floating figures throughout the painting are the spirits and the presence of the missing and murdered women.

Missing but never lost.

Always present, always remembered" - Maxine Noel

Partial proceeds from the sale of this image are donated to the Native Women's Association of Canada and their "Sisters In Spirit" Project. For more information visit www.nwac.ca

Maxine was born in Manitoba of Santee Oglala Sioux parents. She spent her early childhood on her mother’s reserve but at the age of six she left to attend an Indian residential school. Maxine’s early career as a legal secretary was soon overshadowed by her preoccupation with painting and drawing.

Maxine Noel signs her artwork with her Sioux name IOYAN MANI, which translates as “Walk Beyond”.

A step back in time for #Scape day - a #castle in #Germany that we might have overlooked if it hadn’t been for a friend’s recommendation. #blueskyart #eastcoastkin #photographersofbluesky #formalgardens #schlossweesenstein #saxony #baroque #landscape Long description in ALT
Below a dramatic blue sky with white and grey clouds, and in front of a distant green, low-mountain skyline, a castle stands on the right side of the image looking down on beautifully laid-out formal gardens on the left.

The castle, built on a rock, originated as a medieval defense fortress - first mentioned in 1318. Enlarged over the years, the baroque style dating from the 1700s, is now a labyrinthine 8 storeys. It’s a stately stone complex with a main block and several wings. In this image we’re looking end-on at a back corner of the main block facing the garden.

The upper floors, beneath a grey slate roof, are a light pastel yellow/light beige. The long rows of multi-paned windows in these storeys have red frames. In the grey roof, on the narrower end of the block facing the viewer, there are five dormer windows on two floors.

The lowest two storeys are a step out from the main body, providing a terrace above an outside grand staircase leading down into the garden. These floors look lighter and warmer in colour than the upper floors - a light sandstone that in this light has a warm pinkish undertone.

In the background, behind the main castle block we see red tile roofs of other wings of the castle some with eyebrow dormers that look like half-lidded eyes - common in many older dwellings in Saxony, and there is a tower rising above it all.

The round, warm beige tower, rises to an octagonal grey storey with arched windows, then up to a rounded dome and spire, topped with a golden ball and weather vane. Below the arched windows we see two clocks.

The garden has hard-edge gravel paths, symmetrical lawn areas, bordered by floral trim along the central path, which continues to a large fountain area just visible on the left edge of the image.

Among the lawn areas are immaculate hedges and topiaries - some looking like upside-down dark green gum drops. There is a low greenhouse by the edge of the lawn. Beyond the garden there are tree-lined gravel avenues.

Yesterday I climbed 1,519 feet to view Pravcice Gate, a natural rock arch in Hřensko, Czech Republic in the Bohemian Switzerland National Park and - being ignorant of recent natural history in this area - was noticing a lot of dead trees on the climb.

At first, they just looked denuded of branches, some still a grey white in their trunk, but then I began to see all the black and charred ones.

In 2022 there was an extensive forest fire in this area, burning for nearly three weeks. These trees were evidence of how air can be a powerful weapon in spreading destruction even into rocky places.

This image is taken from the arch and looks across the landscape into the Czech Republic.

In the top third, in the far distance against a stormy grey cloudscape there is an isolated peak, just left of centre, surrounded by lush and mature trees.

In the lower third, from this vantage point, we look down on a green tree top in the right corner, and on the left to an outcrop of some mighty rock crags - plentiful this region. The trees, on the rock promontory, bear leafless limbs creating, at this distance, an illusion of soft, upright feathers.

In the wide, middle ‘third’, we see soft, rolling hills, covered with new, even vegetation - like a phoenix coming back to life. But - standing sentinel in this new growth are thousands of grey and black tree spars towering above, like spines in defiance of the raging fires that swept through.

The new growth at the bases of these spars appears like a green carpet in an inspiring reminder that life goes on.

The POV looks across at the corner where an entrance of Royal Arcade meets the commercial Castle Street.

It’s early evening, and the upper third is of a blue ombre sky behind the buildings - from high cloudless sky-blue down to the palest shade glowing behind the brick and tile roofline.

Two buildings butting up at a sharp right angle to each other, is softened by a convex two-storey integral section inside that corner. There is also a narrow, two-storey bowed-window, projecting above the lamp-lit alley on the left.

The arched and vaulted entrance to the arcade takes up the right vertical two thirds.

The purpose-built shopping arcade, designed by George Skipper and opened in 1899, bears his exotic hallmark of Art Nouveau influence.

The bank of upper windows across the front of the building on the left and wrapping around the projecting bow-window, consist of serried narrow frames, containing small leaded lights in five rows of two panes each, above which is a stained glass narrow transom light - each bearing a shield or coat of arms. A warm amber light glows from within.

The Art Nouveau decoration on this building includes repeating horizontal bands of floral and leaf motifs accenting horizontal

In the entrance of the arcade we see hints of enticing golden windows and doorways [to galleries, eateries, and boutique craftworks and gift shops.]

On the arcade facade - a forest green marquee proclaiming: ‘ROYAL ARCADE’ in gold letters; small golden lights among greenery, surround plinths of three forest green pillars supporting a grand, arched and stained glass window depicting four floral trees, with petals picked out in greens and yellows.

Alternating green and sand-coloured brickwork surrounding the arched window continues the Art Nouveau influence with a cartouche bearing curling leaves and stems and a sculpted classical lady’s face atop a torch surrounded by symmetrically ascending flames - all in matching stonework against dark blue tile.

Slipping under the wire for #RockingTuesday, a sample from a recent trip to Terra Mineralia in Leipzig - paradise for rock and mineral lovers [that’s 1225 photos!] #minerals #semi-precious #Leipzig #crystals #naturaljewels #earthtreasures #photographersofbluesky #eastcoastkin See ALT for more
A large horizontal chunk of rock comprised of translucent, thumbnail-sized light plum-coloured fluorite cubic crystals encrusting the top of a light grey-toned substructure composed of barite, quartz and asphalt.

The quartz crystals are tiny encrustations on rounded nodes of the grey base beneath.

A sign, in German, beneath the rock specimen explains that it came from the Deardorff Mine, Hardin County, Illinois, USA. On loan from Prof. Dr. Unland.

A fan of clouds above the tower. Photo taken a few days ago as it is very overcast today in Glastonbury.

'You Blew Me Away' sculpture by Penny Hardy #womensart
Photo featuring a sculpture in a field setting, the work resembles a female figure facing right created with many rust coloured pieces of metal welded together to give the impression of the body being blown by a strong wind

The final cycle of the Tulips is as grand as their entrance. The fuchsia hues with their brilliant green stems lay to feed the next years yield.

The last of my self-distracting posts - one more for #RockinTuesday #bluesky #eastcoastkin #photographersofbluesky #landscape #textures #clouds #coastline #erosion #geology #NorfolkCoast #England See ALT for more
Part of the Norfolk, England coast is covered with innumerable smooth-edged, sea-worn stones - mostly flint - that, along with fossils, have washed out of the soft headland cliffs over past eons as the sea continues to erode it up to six and a half feet per year.

This view looking west-nor-west, and parallel to the shoreline, is a vast, steep beach completely covered in countless smooth rocks of all sizes from brick-to pebble-to coarse sand.

To the left of the image are soft cliffs, some sloping to the beach, covered in vegetation, and others more precipitous with exposed sandy subsoil.

To the right, the cold sea, hued light brown by turbulent sandy sediment, is on its return tide with white caps on the waves.

The sky is light blue, but almost filling the sky it’s being mostly upstaged by dramatic bright cumuli clouds coming over the headland in the distance, chased by the bright sun on the left, soon headed toward pre-sunset.

This cheerful-looking ‘face’ took me by surprise while #beachcombing in #Norfolk #England. #RockinTuesday #flint #sea-worn #blueskyart #photographersofbluesky #texture #vertebrae #circleoflife See ALT for context
The photo is a close up of a rocky beach completely filled with smooth-edged stones of varying shades of grey, some brown. At the bottom of the photo is a driftwood, multi-branched twig.

In the middle of the image is a single, sun-bleached, seal vertebrae. The angle of the vertebrae was such that the empty canals through which the spinal cord and blood vessels pass appear as a smiling face.

Not gruesome but - in the moment - for me, it was a reminder that there is a natural circle of life. And that’s okay.

Lots of #RockinTuesday formations to be found along the #hiking trails in Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah, even when they're not all the signature red-orange colors of the canyon. #EastCoastKin #landscapephotography #travel #landscape #hoodoos #NationalParks #Utah #Utahhiking
