Carney is trying to get ahead of criticisms by saying this announcement is tied to others: carbon capture (a snake oil solution to climate change used to extract more oil from depleted wells) And ocean conservation efforts (good! But not enough to mitigate the pipeline harm!!)

Ottawa Police have already been using police databases to stalk random women they see in public Now Toronto Police are (allegedly) using police databases to help drug traffickers interested in assassinating prison officials and intimidating witnesses to murders www.thestar.com/news/gta/stu...
Toronto Const. Timothy Barnhardt was unaware a recording device had been hidden inside his police cruiser as he invited an alleged drug dealer into the passenger seat. Barnhardt showed the man the computer screen attached to the centre console, where the veteran officer could search confidential databases containing people's home addresses. Police allege that Barnhardt had been feeding the information gleaned from the searches to criminals, who used it to conduct shootings, robberies and other violent acts. Inside the cruiser on that September 2025 day, the man handed Barnhardt multiple $100 bills, which the officer tucked into the front pocket of his police vest.

The world’s richest have descended on Canada — and they’re hungry. The menu of Canadian projects and assets up for sale (and those not disclosed) have some onlookers worried about privatization. What Canada will be left when the dust of the Trump threat settles? This summit raises that question:

If you’re wondering why people in AI continue to work on developing a technology that many of them believe could result in mass death and even the extinction of humanity, this is a good summary of the reasoning I’ve seen:
jasmine sun @jasminewsun
X.com
I hear roughly 3 reasons people keep working at Al labs despite believing in ~10% extinction risk:
1) Techno-determinism: Someone will build ASI no matter what, and I can do it better & more safely than China/ OpenAl/etc
2) Consequentialism: ASI might kill us, but it also might produce utopia/ immortality/superabundance, so it's a +EV bet
3) Self-interest: I am personally having fun & getting rich working on cool tech with friends. I don't think about the macro stuff.
