I think all the time about what my life would have been like if I had been born a boy. If I was praised for my leadership abilities instead of getting in trouble for being bossy. If I hadn’t been harassed out of the computer science department. I think I would have taken over the world by now

In positive news, we’ve entered spooky season. I’m going to hibernate and watch all the horror movies.

I’m not without sin. People who knew me when I was quite young could absolutely remember me saying some rape apologia about events in the news during my unfortunately common “not like other girls, pick me” phase. Thankfully, I grew out of that shit. Many never do.

So many people don’t want restorative justice. They want zero consequences for horrifying behavior that ruins the lives of others.

I still think about a specific tech industry instance of this. We tried to ban a man who assaulted someone at a tech conference from attending conferences for at least some time for the safety of the victim and others. People lost their fucking minds about it.

Restorative justice doesn't mean "nothing bad ever happens to you." It means, "in determining what happens from here on out, we center the needs of your victim to repair what happened to them over your own needs."

Me: I don't get it. I thought I was doing a lot better than I was a few years ago. I'm like 10 times more on top of things than I used to be. How does everything feel terrible now?

The Tiny Me in OSHA-approved Hi-Vis Gear Who lives in my brain and pulls all the levers: Boss, it's the fascism. You're completely gunked up with cortisol due to the fact that your entire daily life is now underscored with a haunting awareness of the rapid erosion of your rights, dignity, and any and all social safety nets, and you're also bearing witness to the most vulnerable people immediately being persecuted. This creates a natural stress response that basically means you're going to continue having memory and organizational problems, as well as emotional imbalances.

Me: BUT I HAVE A BULLET JOURNAL AND I MEDITATE NOW.

Tiny OSHA Me: BOSS, THE FASCISM.

Yeah this Cornell thing is like a mass disabling event for survivors. I am fine, I *was* fine. But now it's in the zeitgeist again so I get to be reminded of my own college experience, something I hadn't thought about in decades, on a daily basis.

It’s so traumatizing when these sexual assault cases make it in the news again because it just feels like fucking Groundhog Day. This happens regularly and nothing seems to meaningfully improve. I hate it here.

me too was a flawed movement, and it was also less than ten years ago. the details of my experiences, and so many others, were put out into the world in the hopes that someone would give a shit less than ten years ago, and there's an eerie deja vu to watching it happen again. love to everyone

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

partner: Why is the entailment such a big deal? me: It's sort of like those same tech workers having no saved emergency funds for a downturn in their famously boom-bust industry. They kept hoping they'd magically be saved (have a son) and didn't really plan for a plausible bad outcome.

partner: Are the Bennets poor? me: They are "poor" in the same way that a well-off tech worker who lives paycheck-to-paycheck because they live beyond their means is poor. They aren't the highest of upper class, but they have more money than most.

Hey, I notice you're trying to influence political candidates during an election. That's really inconvenient, politically speaking. Wouldn't it be better to wait until after the election, when the candidate has everything they need from you, and you have zero leverage?
