Meta has enabled Muse to build extensive and ever-growing profiles on the orbit of people in a user’s life. Based on user input but also “publicly available information.” Whether that means a web search, Facebook’s own extensive data, or buying data broker info…we don’t know? And we can’t opt out.

I don’t think everyone realizes how bad things are for US science: For the fiscal year that just ended, the Trump regime withheld $1.4 billion from the National Science Foundation’s research budget, which is about 1/5 of its primary research budget.

National Science Foundation Diverted $1.4 Billion in Science Funds Mandated by Congress (Gift Article)
The move, affecting about one-fifth of the National Science Foundation’s primary research budget, is the latest sign of how the White House is asserting more control over grants.

It's so incredibly systemic and it's been a known problem for at least 30 years. *flips tables*
Screenshot: Key takeaways
Doctors are paid less for gynecologic surgeries than for similar surgeries on men. That pay gap has barely improved in the last 20 years.
The value of each procedure is largely set by a committee of doctors that relies on self-reported, and sometimes inaccurate, surveys in which doctors report the skill and time their own procedures require.
When doctors are paid less to treat women’s health concerns, hospitals allocate fewer resources to those services, leading to worse outcomes for women
Experts say the gap can be closed by reconsidering how gynecologic surgeries are valued and removing sex-specific billing codes.
That term, which has since entered the medical literature, stuck because the problem it describes has been well documented for decades. In 1997, a group of gynecologic surgeons published a paper in the journal Gynecologic Oncology with a title that gets straight to it — “Is Adam worth more than Eve?” Dr. Barbara A. Goff, now chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at University of Washington Medicine, and colleagues found that doctors are paid around 44 percent more for performing male-specific procedures than analogous female-specific ones.

When Virginia abolished capital punishment they added $3.9M back to their annual budget. Illinois added $4.7M to theirs. As far back as 2011, the ACLU estimated California could eliminate $1B in spending in five years. Abolition saves.

If you see this post a vampire that isn’t Dracula
A still from Rob Renzetti’s Mina and the Count. Mina, a young girl with a big red ponytail is smiling with joy and holding a teacup while perched on a flowered chair at a table. Her tea companion is a very tall, blue vampire who has folded himself into the child-sized chair opposite her. He is elegantly dressed and smiling as he prepares to sip tea from his tiny teacup.

I didn't hold back. These centers are a blight on higher education and we should say so. dailyiowan.com/2026/09/15/u...
“Center for Intellectual Freedom is a really Orwellian name because they’re forcing mandatory classes on students who don’t want it,” Ray said. “Just as a matter of pure consistency, if closing African American Studies was just a financial decision, the center should be closed.” Ray said universities do a better job fostering free thought than any other institution — including churches, workplaces, and the military.

“You can say and do things at universities that you cannot do anywhere else,” he said. “So the notion that universities are a problem when it comes to free speech is just a lie.”

"revenue generating" coach salaries should match adjunct salaries. They should do it for love of the sport! If it's enough money for an adjunct to live on, it's enough for a basketball or football coach to live on! Adjuncts serve the university's mission! Paying coaches like adjuncts is generous.

A common response is "if they know this, why keep drilling?" At BP, many have not internalized the stakes personally. At ExxonMobil, the stakes are well understood, but they're locked in a race for market share, believing if they don't extract it, a competitor will.

More efforts at killing higher education in the United States. Good luck filling any of the specialized medicine training programs. And basic science? The engine that drives everything? This is bad. I’d argue even worse for businesses.
