I’ve spent a lot of time trying to raise awareness of the “hidden” part of data centers’ water footprint: the water consumed to generate the electricity they use.

The water consumed inside data centers themselves, typically for cooling systems, is often just the tip of the iceberg. The lion’s share of the total water footprint can lie upstream, in electricity generation, yet this indirect water consumption is largely ignored.

Ironically, while we have a greenhouse gas accounting framework that requires companies to report the CO₂ emissions associated with the electricity they consume, there is no similarly widely adopted framework for water, even though both impacts arise from the same process of power generation.

As a result, tech companies can present reductions in on-site water consumption as sustainability wins, even when the technologies used to achieve them may increase the total water footprint through higher electricity demand.

It’s encouraging to see mainstream media beginning to recognize this distinction and highlight the current shortcomings in ESG reporting. Hopefully, this is the start of a broader conversation about accounting for the full water footprint of digital infrastructure.
