Here’s my latest update on AI Mega Centres in Hamilton.
UPDATE 2 - AI Mega Data Centres

What a remarkable turn out of residents from across Hamilton to the Committee of Adjustment (CoA) on June 4th to have their say on an application that was technically about land severance but referenced future hyperscale data centres among its potential land uses.

Hamiltonians made themselves very clear, meaningful public consultation is their expectation before any decisions about land use for large-scale data centres are made.

Last week, I hosted a virtual Community Information Session with over 90 neighbours registered to help them understand what the Committee of Adjustment is, how to the public can participate in it, to provide clarity on what the application was seeking approval for, what staff’s recommendations were, and to have a general discussion about the current state of large-scale data centres.

After nearly 1700 written correspondences were received and a full day of delegations, the CoA denied the application stating that though the application "meets all the regulations" for land severance however, "because of residents, the way they came out today and voiced their opinions,” they voted to deny the severance.- What does this mean for the future of the site?
The applicant would continue to pursue their plan for dividing up their lands to prepare it for a variety of future uses. I encourage neighbours to review the revised Q&A portion of the Steelport webpage to learn more about their intended use of the site. They also have a button for questions to be submitted directly.

- What does this mean for the future of large-scale data centres in Hamilton?
The CoA has no bearing on land use for large-scale data centres. However, the motion I have tabled for the June 16th Planning Committee directs staff to report back with details for a municipal framework for the development of data centres in our city.

Neighbours have very real concerns related to water use, sustainable energy, noise, job-loss, and other negative impacts of mass scale AI data centre developments. They want and deserve the opportunity to have public input prior to brand new land uses are approved.

- How does the recent announcement from the federal government about AI and data centres factor in?
All forms of industrial development require due diligence, and now is when we must take the time to tackle the issues being raised in our shared communities with an adequate legislative framework at all three levels of government.

This would be best achieved through a standard of excellence in public engagement and true innovation rooted in transparency and trust. I will continue to advocate for this. I am at the FCM annual conference as I write this update to discuss this with municipal representatives from across Canada to invite such coordination now to ensure the future of technological advancement comes with safeguards to protect people, our communities, and our planet.

Human & environmental health impacts of mega data centres worry my neighbours.   I have tabled a motion for a report on: planning/zoning code criteria for mega data centres, standards for governing energy, water use, & public benefits.   Have ideas to strengthen this, email ward3@hamilton.ca

An oft-repeated statistic says men apply for a job when they have 60% of the qualifications while women wait till they have 100%. Pretty sure that stat was debunked, but … Several men seem to think that being Mayor is a suitable starter job for someone with no municipal experience. It’s not.
