The National Cancer Institute (part of NIH) released new guidelines for "controversial, high-profile or sensitive" keywords that require "review prior to publication" if included in a product or materials. Keywords include abortion, obesity, and peanut allergies.
Materials produced or authored by NCI staff that address topics that may be controversial, high profile, or sensitive must be sent to the NCI Clearance Team for review prior to publication.

Depending on the nature of the information, additional review and clearance by the NCI director, deputy directors, NIH, and HHS may be required. In some cases, the material will not need further review, but the NCI Clearance Team will share it with NCI leadership, NIH, and/or HHS for their awareness.

Examples of controversial or high-profile topics include, but are not limited to:

Cancer Moonshot
NCI budget
COVID-19
Vaccines
H5N1/bird flu
Opioids ,
Marijuana
Dietary guidelines/ultra-processed foods
Obesity
Stem cell or fetal tissue research
Abortion
Autism
Peanut allergies
Fluoride
Measles
Diversity/equity efforts
Gender ideology
Environmental justice
Discussion of federal policies
Topics of federal investigations
Issues concerning pending legislation
Topics that have received recent attention from Congress
Topics that have received widespread or critical media attention

repeat after me: an AI system does NOT and CANNOT seek power. it CANNOT seek, want, & desire anything more than your toaster can. people in positions of power use AI to seek, assert, consolidate, and centralise power

In happier news, today is National Black Women Physicians Day. My fellow Black women physicians and I proudly stand on the shoulders of Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler (1831–1895), who, in 1864, became the first Black woman to earn a medical degree in the United States.

Reproducing my viral thread from Twitter on why we should stop using the term "sub-Saharan Africa" Academics routinely use this term. For many years, I also used it without really thinking much about it or questioning its use. But it’s problematic and should be avoided. Here are the reasons:

It can't engage in good faith with ethical issues, because it has no faith, principles or values. It can't interpret, contextualise or reflect, because it has no stake, perspective or location from which to offer these things. It can't deal with the latent or implicit. 11/13

Analysis identifies and makes sense of patterns. Patterns require interpretation; presentation of those patterns requires contextualisation. Both of these require the author to be *located in the work*. 9/13

If you don't know what to write, my suggestion is always to pretend you're on the phone with a friend and they want to know what you're looking at. How would you let them know the vibe of the image you're looking at? What would let them understand why *that* specific image is in that specific post?

"92 million low-income people in the U.S. states—everyone whose income is less than 200 percent of the federal poverty line—have some basic aspect of their lives decided by AI" www.techtonicjustice.org/reports/ines... this is a damning report
reads: The Ways AI Decides How Low-Income People Work, Live, Learn, and Survive

The use of artificial intelligence, or AI, by governments, landlords, employers, and other powerful private interests restricts the opportunities of low-income people in every basic aspect of life: at home, at work, in school, at government offices, and within families. AI technologies derive from a lineage of automation and algorithms that have been in use for decades with established patterns of harm to low-income communities. As such, now is a critical moment to take stock and correct course before AI of any level of technical sophistication becomes entrenched as a legitimate way to make key decisions about the people society marginalizes.

Employing a broad definition of AI, this report represents the first known effort to comprehensively explain and quantify the reach of AI-based decision-making among low-income people in the United States. It establishes that essentially all 92 million low-income people in the U.S. states—everyone whose income is less than 200 percent of the federal poverty line—have some basic aspect of their lives decided by AI.

#WIPWednesday • I finished the long piece of thread I had started on the pelvis and am now setting up the base for honeycomb filling stitch on the stent area. #SciArt #IliacVein #embroidery #MedSky 🐡🧪🧶
A pelvis, lumbar vertebrae, and part of the iliac vein are sketched in blue marker on white linen. Most of the iliac vein is outlined in grey-green stem stitch. A section on the left branch has some darker grey-green split stitch started. Intricate turbulence is stitched in single strand dark aquamarine backstitch within the iliac vein. The bones are being stitched in thick backstitch in a white just slightly bluer than the white linen. An hourglass shaped needle minder reading, “this is taking forever” holds the needle.
