They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

One humongous difference between journalists and politicians facing an error they've made is that the former issues a correction and the latter doubles down. (sure, sure: *most* journalists, *not all* politicians)

This! The incessant attacks on reality have caused us to tone down or steer clear of even basic facts and moral statements, which only cedes more ground to the anti-reality industry.

Hey I'm not actually done talking about Dolly Parton. 🧵 Specifically I want to talk about her album 9 to 5 and Odd Jobs, released in 1980 (not the soundtrack to the film 9 to 5, that's a different thing). The whole album is about work, with most of the songs focused on a different type of worker.

Michael Elliott — College Should Be Way More Fun
This post is an essay by Michael Elliott recently published in Atlantic.  Here's a link to the original. In it he explores a topic dear to my heart, that college -- and  intellectual life in general -- should be experienced as a form of play.  It's not a chore that you need trudge through out a sense of duty or as the high price you have to pay to get to something pleasurable -- like a good job and a good life.
