They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

I liked this bit: "One is the foolish “we don’t need know stuff cuz we has google” argument ... It’s hard to look things up when you don’t know enough to ask questions. And storing information outside your brain just means that it’s not available to power your thinking or insights."

One humongous difference between journalists and politicians facing an error they've made is that the former issues a correction and the latter doubles down. (sure, sure: *most* journalists, *not all* politicians)

This! The incessant attacks on reality have caused us to tone down or steer clear of even basic facts and moral statements, which only cedes more ground to the anti-reality industry.

Hey I'm not actually done talking about Dolly Parton. 🧵 Specifically I want to talk about her album 9 to 5 and Odd Jobs, released in 1980 (not the soundtrack to the film 9 to 5, that's a different thing). The whole album is about work, with most of the songs focused on a different type of worker.

I've been toying with this idea about how we explicitly reframe the value of college to include other outcomes rather than ROI & workforce training. These are important outcomes but colleges also help people understand and participate in society and their governments as *citizens*.
