Mars may be a hellhole, but the moon is not far behind
We’re still imagining building cities on the moon. There are just a few obstacles in the way.

We should get our groups together. I'm at the ICOMOS Aerospace Heritage Scientific Committee meetings this week. We got the World Monuments Fund to designate the Moon as natural and cultural "heritage in peril" in 2025. www.wmf.org/monuments/moon

Super cool that the Geological Society of America meeting this year has a co-session between planetary geology folks and geoheritage folks, looking at different ways of determining whether our goals with space exploration are to preserve planetary sites as-is, or manage them with human activity.

Crop marks near Ballymore Eustace, Co Kildare, June 1963. The NMS identifies this as a possible bivallate rath with a potential annex to the south. But which way is south in the photograph? To understand that we need to georeference the image, or tie the image to points in the modern landscape.

Haven't read this yet, but it is true that while CA wine is absolutely world-class, it's also typically far overpriced, even in California. Spanish wine, for example, is way better value for money, in the US.

I met a junior scholar when I was giving a lecture at an R1 not long ago. Their area sounded interesting; when we had coffee they suggested that maybe we could collaborate. I asked them to send me something from their field so I could understand how we fit. They sent me an article that was pure slop

Honestly hard to see how a project led by the US and Russia, two countries currently involved in wars of choice, could have been a likely selection, even if the project is a remarkable and durable example of international cooperation.

Yes, SpaceX owns most of the world's satellites (hotdogguy.jpg), but seriously a big issue is Chinese operators do not share ephemeris data, do not provide notice of manuevers, don't answer the phone to discuss impending conjunctions, and they have 1,000 sats and growing fast

I am not the only person who noticed this. People were commenting directly on the videos, so I would guess that had more to do with it. In the past, NASA discouraged showing personal displays in public photos and videos, so there was already a policy in place.

This is the $64,000 question: what does it mean that one or more members of the US crew have chosen to prominently display photographs of Jared Isaacman, Elon Musk, and Wernher von Braun? I am not comfortable in stating a definitive answer, because we don't know who precisely is responsible.

There are other things to be said, but that's enough for now. It's clear from how people here on Earth (especially on a Bluesky) have reacted to the new display that these kinds of things lead to multiple interpretations.

Justin Walsh @jstpwalsh.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
But the Russian one's space heroes are exclusively associated with the past, while the new US one links the past to the present and future (one which looks bleak indeed for the Russian space program).

Justin Walsh @jstpwalsh.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
At the same time, the location of this display specifically orients it as a response to the original Russian one. Both are on the aft walls of their respective modules, over a portal and the table where the group eats and socializes.

Their priority is to develop space for America. The fact that Wernher von Braun was a literal Nazi who used Jewish slave labor to build rockets, and Elon Musk made a Nazi salute at a political rally, and Isaacman is willing to use Trumpian language doesn't have anything to do with "the mission."
