When you consider the scale of the economics and social impact of this, it’s genuine serious Hard Journalism being done here.

Reminder that both the "mass vaccination = mass death" nutcases, and the "ongoing deadly pandemic" lot are proven wrong every day. Actuaries - whose jobs depend on getting death rates right regularly publish age-standardised mortality rates. Post-pandemic, back to a steady year-on-year improvement.
Chart showing standardaised mortality rates for England and Wales. After a steady improvement 2016-2019, and then a bunch of pandemic-driven bumps 2020-2022, the lines start improving again 2023-2026 which is shaping up to the best ever.

Last week I received a rejection from The New Yorker for a short story I submitted. "Thank you for your submission to The New Yorker. While there is much to admire in this piece, we regret that we are unable to use it in the magazine." I'm taking some encouragement in that, weirdly. #amwriting

Reuters got some of the IPO docs. Anthropic is a total dog of a company. Spent $12.6bn to make $4.6bn in revenue in 2025, $7.33bn of which was compute costs. Operating loss of $8bn. Losses getting worse year over year. Amazing stuff www.reuters.com/business/fin...
Summary
Companies
• Anthropic IPO could value the company at more than $2
trillion
• Anthropic lost $42 billion in 2025
• Al lab spent $7.33 billion on compute and infrastructure last year
• Operating loss widened to $8.06 billion in 2025 from $2.98 billion in 2024
• Execs, industry analysts have expressed concerns over harms of Al tech
Sept 28 (Reuters) - Anthropic is making a massive bet that Al will transform the global economy more profoundly than industrialization, electricity and the internet, according to its IPO prospectus seen by Reuters.
But the cost to get there will be staggering. Anthropic reported a net loss of $42 billion in 2025, and plans to spend $518 billion on cloud, computing and infrastructure obligations in coming year, according to the
prospectus.

Not to be some wild-eyed innocent, but I think it should be slightly bigger news that The Lancet have crunched the numbers and found that Musk's USAID cuts will kill 14 million people. And that's just by 2030. That's 9,600 people a day, every day, until the next world cup rolls around.

Beacon Tarn in Cumbria, in the morning. The lake water is completely still, and reflects the sky, blue with dappled cloud. The Tarn is ringed by green heathland. There’s some Cumbrian mountains in the distance.

I wrote a short story, pretty decent one I think, submitted it to a couple of competitions. Got rejections in the last few days, completely understandable, the volume of entries must’ve been huge. But left with odd feelings — where did I come in the stack? what do I do with it now? Etc. All strange.

A dawning realisation of the thing with social media, esp. with reading on a small screen device, is that for each instant just one topic consumes all your focus, no sense of significance vs. other topics … and it’s easy to get sucked down a hyperfocus special interest tunnel. Cf. random screenshot:
Screengrab of a random story from the Financial Times on Bluesky, illustrating the singular focus of just one topic on the screen, and no sense of contextual significance vs other topics
