I'm still not sure what an "agony aunt" is, but the vibes are all warmth and playfulness for me. I appreciate that they get into the sticky questions around play instead of just profiling games. So, I'd give this a try even if you're burned out on other bg podcasts.

Hey all! For the last 18 months, I’ve somehow managed to put out new material every month. With the new school year starting, I won’t be able to keep up that pace in the coming year. But stay tuned because in a week I’m launching the next new experiment for The Looking Glance!

Been playing this quiz game someone posted on BGG and I find it fascinating how after an abysmal first few rounds I started getting much better at it. There's a skill of being able to predict how a community will rate something that says a lot about how we create social consensus. #boardgames

Board game criticism matters, not because it guides people towards 'good' games and away from 'bad' ones. But because it opens up the conversation about games. It establishes the cultural significance of play, while also expanding our vocabulary and the tools we have to reflect on it.

There’s no way to exactly quantify how much a writer waffles over a thorny topic, but it's indicative of how much I wrestled with “A Gamer’s History of the US” that so much got left on the cutting room floor. This isn't an unusual ratio for academic writing, but it’s a lot for an opinion piece.
Two snippets of the word count tallies displayed by MS Word. The published version weighs in at 13 pages or 4,982 words and the cuts weigh in at 74 pages or 21,704 words.

Not a fan of silly start player rules in general, but this one may be my favorite. It changes game to game, is genuinely thematic (much more so than having visited a particular place), and is a cute way of making a legitimate public health announcement. #boardgames #forbiddenisland

This and Ava Foxfort's recent piece are so refreshing in a hobby space where so much of the writing aims at reviewing games for would-be consumers. As a medium of play, games may be better suited to this kind of experiential and emotional writing than to being treated like commodities.

I see we've reached the point where #boardgame rulebooks are now openly making fun of cutesy start player rules. I can get on board with this. (the game is Recall, btw)
A snippet from the setup rules for Recall that states "Use a quantum randomizer to pick a random player. If your future self has still not found a way to deliver such a device to you, determine the starting player in any other way you find appropriate. The starting player places the time board to their right. Place the hourglass on the first space."

I scrolled past this the first time because I'm not interested in standard "I played this" convention reports, but this is well worth a read. Centering the emotional experience means I'm not thinking about *what* Ava played but *how* Ava plays. And that's much more meaningful.
