Just read somewhere that Wehrle games are many things, but competitive isn't one of them. Which is not the kind of take, I expected on a weekday.

Is there a meaningful difference between having agency and being proficient at a game?

It was bad enough to endure a Trek show name-dropping Musk, but these recurring Potter references on Lanterns are really starting to sour me on a show I'd enjoy otherwise. They're clunky, out of place and just nails-on-chalkboard annoying.

About as middle-of-the-road as they come, but those are the games that defined my digital gaming era.
My 9 games include: The Secret of Monkey Island, Super Mario Kart, Super Mario 64, Final Fantasy IV, Spellcasting 101 - Sorcerers get all the Girls, The Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Final Fantasy VI and Super Mario World.

What is the purpose of good game design, appealing presentation and an easy to read rulebook? #boardgames

The goal is agency
After a prolonged absence, a solo game made it onto my table again. It’s a game I had found difficult and quite random in the past. One of the reasons for the long pause, was the simple effort it took, to think your way into the game. There were too many uncertainties, you had to keep in mind, to even make a decision.

The number of games worth playing is astronomically high. The number of games worth owning, in the sense that you have a copy within reach should the opportunity to play it arise, is infinitesimally smaller. That is the boardgamer's dilemma.

Played Vale of Eternity last night, and it was good fun as usual. But it reminded me that some games never quite find their footing, once you have more than 20 games in your collection.

Why do we appreciate 'punishing' games? What is about them, and more importantly about this phrasing, that is so appealing?

What I like about Faiyum is that player actions inadvertently populate and cultivate the board. The game organically grows more intricate as a consequence of player actions. I am less enamoured with it all ending in a basic and simplistic VP comparison. It incentives envy, not ingenuity.

Adjusting comparisons between film and board games: A designer is seen as a game's director, when they're actually the screenwriter. A graphic artist is seen as the game's set designer when they're actually the DP. Players are seen as the game's audience, when they're actually its main cast.

I continue to be amazed by Take Time. Such a fun and engaging puzzle every time we play. Although I'm beginning to suspect that it hinges a lot on players' ability to constructively deal with setbacks. If you're too uptight, or need to blame somebody for losing, I'd imagine this game is awful.

I'm convinced that for game criticism to evolve, we don't need deeper thematic analysis or more visceral descriptions of gameplay. We actually need to address the inherent theatricality of play, and how some games rely on it.

It's very telling that when people vote for a fascist party that wins, they're never overcome with hope that things will get better for them. It is always glee at the prospect of inflicting punishment on somebody. Because they can only ever understand society as a hierarchy of abuse.

I don't know if it's funny or sad, that my last few plays of Maquis have always been around the time of elections with what is expected to be a worrisome outcome. Regardless, I've enjoyed playing as the French Resistance and won most of the time. Vive la resistance, I guess.

Like many boardgamers I have a completionist weakness. Most of the time I manage to resist it, with The Vale of Eternity I failed. So I finally caved in and picked up the Artifacts expansion to complete my set. Now to print out an insert to make it fit in the base box.

The long way towards “knowing how to play”
Every new game is a bit of an effort at first. Sometimes more, sometime less. First of all, we have to unpack that game. Something that can evoke so much delight within the hobby, that there are entire videos dedicated to it. But then you have to take on the game’s rules. Outside of the hobby this is cause for much worry and consternation.

The main difference between Flamme Rouge and Heat appears to be that Flamme Rouge seems involved to play, but is actually straight-forward. Whereas Heat seems straight-forward but has a couple of tricky distinctions to keep in mind.

How often do you have to play a game before you can talk about it? And why do we feel that the answer matters? #boardgames
lestmyopinions.com
Truth by way of documentation
Some content creators like to include how often they’ve played a game when they publish a review of it. Especially when board game enthusiasts begin to publish their thoughts and opinions on games, they eventually ask themselves: how often do I have to play a game, before I can review it (or am allowed to, depending on their beliefs about personal freedoms).
130
Georgios @georgiosp.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
Maybe the answer is simpler, in that the reason why we publish our thoughts on games also informs the games we choose to talk about. Whether it's to promote games, to generate clicks, to inform our audience, to articulate our own ideas about games, etc. Maybe not all motivations are compatible.

In less contentious news: I've been playing Keep Talking & Nobody Explodes with my son. He got braces the other day and has been very introverted since. Playing a cooperative game with him has been great to get him out of his shell. And just generally more content.
