Uber’s COO has said that it’s getting “harder to justify” its AI costs because there was no way to show a link between AI spend and any meaningful increase in useful features. This is the first time I’ve seen a company say this directly. www.businessinsider.com/uber-coo-and...
"That link is not there yet, right?" he said. think maybe implicitly there is more that is getting shipped, but it's very hard to draw a line between one of those stats and, 'Okay, now we're actually producing 25% more useful consumer features."
He said that the trade-off costs from Al are harder to justify because he can't draw a direct link. Earlier this month, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in an earnings call that Uber was slowing hiring to counter its investments in AI.The comment led to what he described as a
"head-exploding moment," sparking discussions about AI token consumption within the company and the trade-offs it creates, such as on head count.
He said that, based on talks with Uber's senior engineering leaders, he realized higher token usage did not translate into a proportional increase in useful consumer features.

A question I get from students a lot that I'm not sure I can answer: Is there a place where people are discussing building sustainable/public interest/civic projects? As in talking about the challenges they face/sharing tips/recommendations, promoting their work to others to get extra eyes on WIP?

People once lauded for their desire to use technology to improve people's lives are now openly & persistently advocating for decimating public sector unions as well as replacing workers with generative AI trained on stolen works.

At the beginning of the month I thought the library was close to ready, but spending all month with it made me realize there are 2-3 big things I want to do before stabilizing the API. I also added a lot of features as I went, but most are poorly documented.

It's been fun sharing these & seeing everyone else's all month! my HTML-only #genuary28 will be the polished/updated version of the site & docs for honeycombs/h9.js, the library I've been using for all of these, but that'll probably be in a few weeks.

most of the work on this one was an experimental WebGL renderer backend, honeycombs/h9.js now has SVG, canvas, and WebGL renderers. h9.bees.free/genuary26/31... felt fitting to demonstrate w/ a return to one shape one color.

There is no path forward for democracy in this country where ICE is intact and those that led, funded, and supported it walk free. Dismantling this before it gets worse needs to be the highest priority.

I am currently using Claude Code to help me develop a mobile app (I have no swift experience) while I handle the backend. Every time I ask it to build me a new feature with plan mode, it comes up with an elaborate scheme that involves re-writing things, building new views, models, etc.
Even without knowing swift / Apple development, I can see that half the stuff it is proposing is unnecessarily complex.
For example, I am currently implementing pagination for data in the analytics page of my app. I say:
"The skeleton animation works good on the page when awaiting the initial data fetch, but for pagination it just deletes the info cards and then replaces them with the new data (looks bad). I just want to have the existing skeletons show up for that async fetch period"
To this Claude tried to get a pagination manager with an integrated date period and search function that also manages the loading state and animations. All it needed to do was reuse the existing code it wrote that manages the skeletons animations and have them display during the fetch.
This happens so much it is frustrating (even after adding multiple lines in claude.md about overcomplication).

If you are working on/considering a project that needs to do point-in-polygon lookup (e.g. what congressional district am I in?) I've been prototyping a tiny library to do this without a PostGIS server as quickly as possible. (Standalone rust binary with pre-loaded shapefiles.)

I will never forgive these people for what they’ve done to the computer, and the more I learn about both their intentions and actions the more certain I am that they are unrepentant and that their greed will never be sated. I have watched them take the things that made me human — social networking, digital communities, apps, and the other connecting fabric of our digital lives — and turned them into devices of torture, profitable mechanisms of abuse, and find it disgusting how many reporters seem to believe it's their responsibility to thank them and explain why it's good this is happening to their readers.
