CIF has been a great opportunity for students! I’d love to connect to TPG if they’re interested in early career folks. The ones that have approached have reported they felt like it wasn’t for them, not sure if that’s accurate or just a comms issue.

Uber’s COO has said that it’s getting “harder to justify” its AI costs because there was no way to show a link between AI spend and any meaningful increase in useful features. This is the first time I’ve seen a company say this directly. www.businessinsider.com/uber-coo-and...
"That link is not there yet, right?" he said. think maybe implicitly there is more that is getting shipped, but it's very hard to draw a line between one of those stats and, 'Okay, now we're actually producing 25% more useful consumer features."
He said that the trade-off costs from Al are harder to justify because he can't draw a direct link. Earlier this month, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in an earnings call that Uber was slowing hiring to counter its investments in AI.The comment led to what he described as a
"head-exploding moment," sparking discussions about AI token consumption within the company and the trade-offs it creates, such as on head count.
He said that, based on talks with Uber's senior engineering leaders, he realized higher token usage did not translate into a proportional increase in useful consumer features.

appreciate the gentle pushback though, it's something that needs to be thought through more but I'm convinced by how frequently I hear it that something is missing that could help

part of the issue is they often wind up on small teams, 2-3 devs, perhaps none much more senior than them (this is the nature of these smaller teams), and more and more often are working remotely so need community outside the orgs themselves

It's the early career folks, not ones seeking their first jobs that say this the most-- the connective tissue is useful in being able to move between subfields (a lot of 24yos *think* they want to only do climate or whatever, then it expands for them)
110
jpt @jpt.sh · 26/05/2026
I think the value they are looking for is in the community & continued skill building among peers. "networking" is secondary to that need, perhaps a nice side-effect in theory
110
jpt @jpt.sh · 26/05/2026
they get that for 2 years in school and then as 1-3 year early career devs they struggle to advance or break into new fields

100 percent agree that engaging with the groups going the actual work is part of the answer, the need i’m trying to help them fill is the need for technical peers to learn from/collab with
120
jpt @jpt.sh · 26/05/2026
are you involved? i’d love to know more but never got an email back when i reached out twice. students have reported very negative interactions but hard to go off 2-3 anecdotes— the membership fee out the gate seems like a major barrier (even if there’s an opaque process to have it waved)
110
jpt @jpt.sh · 26/05/2026
not exclusive for, just welcoming to those that aren’t yet working as professionals. for instance those that recently graduated, but needed to take an unrelated job in the interim but want to engage with or even work on community projects.
120
jpt @jpt.sh · 26/05/2026
part of the problem is that there are not many jobs in these fields and if you don’t (yet) have one you don’t know the people— for students that have to take a less “public interest” job this can feel like being pushed out of the ecosystem when they leave the community they have in school
010
jpt @jpt.sh · 26/05/2026
there is a strong need for those entering the field to have community that they aren‘t currently finding, i imagine (but can’t confirm) it’s harder in those even smaller more niche subfields of public interest . are you for instance aware of a community for students interested in labor?

About one ask away from starting a discourse for this, but curious if anyone out there has a better answer.

A question I get from students a lot that I'm not sure I can answer: Is there a place where people are discussing building sustainable/public interest/civic projects? As in talking about the challenges they face/sharing tips/recommendations, promoting their work to others to get extra eyes on WIP?

I'm far from the first to acknowledge that we were overly reliant on a Silicon Valley-centric tech scene that has always been proto-fascist and that continuing the work will mean decoupling from them, for good.

jpt @jpt.sh · 25/02/2026
The vision shared by many of those of us that have worked in {public interest tech/civic tech/whatever you want to call it}--technology as something that can be liberatory & democratizing--is not wrong.
110
jpt @jpt.sh · 25/02/2026
The latter is particularly jarring: an embrace of technosolutionism 100% at odds with the lessons learned by actual practitioners about the real nature of this kind of work and the value of human expertise.

jpt @jpt.sh · 25/02/2026
People once lauded for their desire to use technology to improve people's lives are now openly & persistently advocating for decimating public sector unions as well as replacing workers with generative AI trained on stolen works.

At the beginning of the month I thought the library was close to ready, but spending all month with it made me realize there are 2-3 big things I want to do before stabilizing the API. I also added a lot of features as I went, but most are poorly documented.

It's been fun sharing these & seeing everyone else's all month! my HTML-only #genuary28 will be the polished/updated version of the site & docs for honeycombs/h9.js, the library I've been using for all of these, but that'll probably be in a few weeks.

most of the work on this one was an experimental WebGL renderer backend, honeycombs/h9.js now has SVG, canvas, and WebGL renderers. h9.bees.free/genuary26/31... felt fitting to demonstrate w/ a return to one shape one color.

Unlike the near-impossibility that is giving up factory-farmed food or decoupling your life from our suicidal dependence on oil, giving up big tech is mostly a matter of inconvenience, not survival, and we need to get real with ourselves & one another.

When there are real people being terrorized hurt and killed it can seem like a distraction, but the fight against fascism is the fight against the oligarchs that prefer it, fund it, and support it with their technology.

While we're at it, we need to have a serious conversation about the relationship of big tech to all of this. Not just Musk. Google. Meta. Amazon. All complicit allies of this criminal regime, with vast amounts of data on every person on this planet.

There is no path forward for democracy in this country where ICE is intact and those that led, funded, and supported it walk free. Dismantling this before it gets worse needs to be the highest priority.

#genuary2026 #genuary #genuary4 I'm using these prompts to iterate on h9, which is a mostly-SVG-based geometric drawing tool, so this one posed an interesting challenge. I decided I'd take the opportunity to try out my hardly-used Canvas backend and adapted a vector sketch to this pixelated look
