I honestly had no idea this was going on. A new spam filter is desperately needed for LMM garbage.

oooo, TIL I learned about the 'Research Parasite Awards' and what a cool thing--that it exists and that they reclaimed the term meant to demean re-users of data. researchparasite.com

I am sincerely asking all my science colleagues to stop treating me like I do not know anything or I am anti-technology or that I am even anti-AI for expressing the view that AI tools might be slightly overhyped.

I thought you were sincerely asking why counties exist. If you don't like it, don't live in one. No need to tell others how to govern themselves.

Julia Piaskowski @jpiaskowski.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Yes, indeed. For idaho, this how faraway rural interests overrule local city governments.
110
Julia Piaskowski @jpiaskowski.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
some people prefer it (the space, the quiet), or maybe they are just outside city jurisdiction due to rapid suburban expansion. But there is land outside city jurisdictions where people live, so some mechanism of governing is needed for it. Hence, counties/parishes.
210
Julia Piaskowski @jpiaskowski.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
land usage (zoning, conditional use permits), law enforcement (state troopers v. sheriff's office), local ordinances (how many bars is a county allowed to have), local taxes/levies/etc, for example

Julia Piaskowski @jpiaskowski.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
so people outside cities have some local control. Otherwise, if they live outside a city jurisdiction, they would be subject to state jurisdiction.

I'm learning a new language and it's quite fun to be reminded how different languages have totally new sounds that my native English tongue has not done before and my ears can barely discern. Human language is amazing.

Hey academic peeps, that awful new policy targeting international students got raked over the coals by a Bush-era judge, who wrote that the stated justification of National Security "borders on the absurd".

The part that struck me the most was how much this scientist was an advocate of gen AI tools like Claude Scientist and they still scooped him (allegedly, probably).

Yes, that would be nice instead of this all-out rush to embrace it like it's some race academics have to win.

The gap between what gen AI can do is an how it is often used not so much a chasm as two different manifestations of the multiverse

We’re at the “shipping container courts” stage of ICE’s mass expansion of the enforcement system.
Each detention unit would sit on asphalt or concrete behind an office's existing security fence, with a counter for processing people and a separate holding area fitted with a toilet and sink for detainees according to the draft work statement.
The agency also wants a 300-square-foot unit for interviewing people in custody and a 60-square-foot "Virtual Immigration Court Unit" for hearings run by the Executive Office for Immigration Review, the Justice Department agency that operates the immigration courts.
Both must also be designed for their purpose before delivery.

An understandable reaction to patriarchy. I went through it, too. The world hates women and thinks we are stupid, so why wouldn't we try to distance ourselves from that??

Glad folks are appalled by photos of the "phone booth" cage under an awning, but pls understand: This IG report is likely part of a cover-up. Amnesty Int'l interviewed detainees EIGHT MONTHS AGO who said the cage was half this size (couldn't stand up), had no awning, w feet chained to the bottom.
