Unsurprisingly, four days later, mathematicians have weighed in. And the results are equivocally valuable at best. More importantly the dump has flooded the zone with shit, which is precisely in line with this industry’s weaponized agnotology. Now actual scholars have to waste their time on this.

EVERY. TIME. It drives me bonkers. I see it in scholarship too: French or English sources are "literature", but Celtic-language texts are "folk tales" or "folklore", regardless of their origins or audience.

That has been less of an issue for some years now...ever since I've *literally* started masking for health reasons. Which, I guess, means that masks can be valuable protection for both physical and mental health <.<

Oof, yeah, I feel that. An absurd amount of all the arguments I've had since childhood can be boiled down to that someone claimed I was giving off annoyed, aggressive or mean vibes based on my normal, neutral expression. Oh well.

Today's work includes writing a short piece on Norwegian folk-belief concerning the magpie. One such belief is that around Saint Olaf's feast-day (July 29), the magpies all visit Saint Olaf in order to be weighed. Those that weigh less than a quarter of a kilo are given to the Devil.

Ooh, any bets on wether or not we might get a revival of the discourse on violence in video games? Because if the enemies have "AI" and you can kill them in the game, then... If we're really lucky someone might even make the leap that turning a game *off* would be an act of violence

Ah, addendum to the addendum: I should probably mention that I'm a historian at the University here - so it's free of charge, as my renumeration is being able to talk about history that I find interesting ;-)

Oh, and to reiterate: If you'd like to hear a bit about the history of Bern, it's buildings and Switzerland, well, it's a hobby of mine to share that and give impromptu tours!

Most of that are things that are nice to look at from the outside, but the Münster can also be entered (though the portal is the main attraction) and e.g. the Einsteinhaus (incl. a small museum) is also nearby.

I.e. Bundeshuus/Federal Palace (I'd advise against visiting, because sometimes there are long lines...and it isn't all that interesting inside), Käfigturm, Zytglogge, Münster, Pläfä/Plattform (a nice place for a break & enjoy the view), Rathaus, Nydeggchile, Bärenpark.

Joschka Meier @josserme.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
In that case I think a leisurely stroll through the old city would be a good backbone for a basic itinerary. That takes about....30 minutes I'd say at a measured pace. Along the way from the train station to the Bärenpark are most of the major sights of the fall season.

Joschka Meier @josserme.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
That sounds very sensible, a museum visit would easily add a couple of hours (in the case of the Paul Klee Museum it'd take roughly 40 min to an hour solely to get there and back). Depending on the date, there might be markets and similar stuff on the route from train station to Altstadt

How do you reconcile big business with public health? Easy: deregulate and build a wellness industry around convincing consumers that their health is their own responsibility. Do your own research, make better choices. Corporations get freedom; individuals get the consequences.

My theory about RFK Jr. is that this is individualism taken to its extreme: don't regulate food, don't mandate vaccines. If you get sick, you should've done your own research. Your health is your own responsibility, even when corps. are allowed to put you at risk. The privatization of public health.

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend climbing up the Münster as someone who's from Bern: It's a long, uncomfortable climb and you can get a very nice, comparable view by taking a bus to the Rosengarten (which also has an in/outdoor café) ⬇️
A photo taken from the Rosengarten, with the peninsula, on which the old city of Bern is built, spread out below: A lot of curving rows of old houses with brown, orange and re rooftops, with a couple of larger buildings like churches poking out here and there

@lynnnothegger.bsky.social Anything that interests you in particular? Because there are quite a number of things to see, even in the Altstadt alone (it's not an UNESCO world heritage for nothing), but there's also museums, places to eat...so for a nice, relaxed afternoon one has to pick and choose
A picture taken from the Kirchenfeldbrücke, which shows a couple of the more famous sites in Bern: to the left the Münster with its big church spire, below it the Pläfä (a kind of park on an artificial hill side), below it the Matte quarter with some old houses visible.
In the distance is the Bärenpark (bear park), but the star of the show is the Aare: the turquoise river flowing through Bern

Ah ok! Für mich gibt's da eher vernachlässigbare Nuancen, also "übrcho" passt besser wenn man was von jemanden überreicht/geschickt kriegt - wenn ich z.B. meinem Patenkind was schenke, ist's minim passender, wenn er sagt "I ha vom Joschi es Gschänk übrcho", weil bisschen...formeller? Oder so?
