Have you noticed, lately, or noticed people around you commenting, that there just seems to be no money anymore. There's no money for companies to make the tv shows you like, the video games you like, the local diner you like shut down, no one you know can find a job. Think about that in context of

I knew I wanted a tattoo but couldn't decide what. I turned 18, went on holiday and stepped into a studio by the beach. In a moment of indecision I asked for the word "tattoo" to be tattooed across my chest.

Rutherford's puzzle about 'Napoleon's theorem' was published in 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘴' 𝐷𝑖𝑎𝑟𝑦: 𝑜𝑟 𝑊𝑜𝑚𝑎𝑛'𝑠 𝐴𝑙𝑎𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑎𝑐𝑘. Interestingly, this woman's magazine was an important forum for math problems before more 'serious' math journals appeared in the UK in 1830.

Hot take: I don't think social media made people dumber. We've been dumb this whole time. It's just that you used to have to have a job that people sent their dumb letters to, to notice. This made "Engaging with fools" an occupational hazard rather than the 24/7 experience it is presently.

people get intimidated by the social belief of "supporting the arts" as like donating $5,000,000 for a new wing at a museum or hosting some gala it's not. 10% of our audience throwing us $1.00 a month would literally be *life-changing* money most artists are in the same boat.

There were complaints and editorials written condemning the purchase. People said this was a waste during an economic recession. On top of this, people thought the painting was “bad” especially for the price.

Now if you’re a modern and contemporary art fan, you might think “that was a bargain!” However if you were a resident of Ottawa at the time, you may also think “holy crap what a waste of money”. Many Canadians did.

Initially Smith asked to borrow Voice of Fire, and then asked Annalee if the gallery could purchase it. She agreed and said Smith could determine the price. The painting sold for $1.8 million Canadian in the 80s.

In the early 80s, a curator for the National Gallery of Canada, Brydon Smith, found out that Voice of Fire was available for exhibition via Newman’s widow Annalee. Her and Barnett were friends of Smith.

Barnett Newman was one of the foremost modernist artists in the US and the world. Abstract Expressionism was a major art movement and Newman was a key member of it.
