sending someone unsolicited ChatGPT output as an “answer” to their question is just the human equivalent of when an animal picks up a piece of garbage and proudly brings it to you

Sedation dentistry is no longer weird. Phone cameras are really good. The price of solar panels has dropped by tens of thousands. Southern white rhinos, giant pandas, Arabian oryx and Stellar sea lions are no longer endangered. And, I can testify, modern cancer treatments are fucking amazing.

this iconic advertising copywriter named Kathy Hepinstall Parks died over the weekend and I wanted to share something from her website I thought Bluesky would like
Why should I write better when a machine can do it for me?
Because actually no one can do it for you, because your voice is unique among all the people on earth. Siri never petted a horse's neck. Alexa has never been ghosted by the captain of the football team. But you have lived, your heart is beating, you have suffered, and you have something important to say. It's a human's job, to use words, and whatever job you give to a machine, that part of your brain goes dark. Maybe it's worth it when it comes to remembering phone numbers and directions, but when that part of your brain that uses words goes dark, that's a vast area that's very close to your soul. Don't let some internet platform convince you that what you have to say and create isn't worthwhile. Words are the echo of your soul. Honing that echo matters.

In the Future All Food Will Be Cooked in a Microwave, and if You Can’t Deal With That Then You Need to Get Out of the Kitchen
As a restaurant owner - I'm astounded at the rate of progress since microwaves were released a few short years ago. Today's microwave can cook a frozen burrito. Tomorrow's microwave will be able to cook an entire Thanksgiving Dinner. Ten years from now a microwave may even be able to run the country. Recently I was watching a livestream of a local microwave salesman.

We found the secret to endless productivity and spiritual enlightenment and that's why we're forcing it into every aspect of your life instead of hoarding it for ourselves

“Upfront design helps this” doesn’t work if you build a culture where people are disincentivized to build resilience into the system “Testing and architecture” fails if people are penalized for valuing non coding tasks Slop happens when velocity and PRs per dev are your biggest devex metrics

Like he only read the chapter headings in a book on Kaizen, and missed the need for employees to be deeply engaged in their work, and willing to stop the factory line when the automations aren’t working.

The big “why do you hate AI?” Thread got comments and quotes turned off, but here’s the main reason I hate AI: It’s being developed by the worst people on the planet solely to enrich themselves at the expense and labor of the world’s vulnerable populations. Everything else stems from that

I think Hazel nailed it, in terms of the issue with de-skilling. I think that code generation is a pretty good use case in terms of how good the technology is, but I’m concerned that it’s going to make people worse at coding, especially newer engineers.

Apparently my ideal form of comedy has become stand-up that makes me feel feelings deeply This was funny and excellent, the parallels to my experience with ADHD made it feel very personal and relatable. I feel queasy, belly laughs alongside gut punches leaving me fucked up tonight but wanting more

A #squirrel gets gently brushed and clearly enjoys it. When the scratching stops, it taps for more. This reaction is common in #mammals, as grooming and gentle touch can trigger calming responses and even release endorphins.

Also, it may shock you, but it’s *easier* to test for these things than for most types of “technical aptitude” As a bonus, in my experience, it’s had a stronger correlation to job performance to boot

> HR control... This was the case for me too, sometimes that watches and stuff are just gadget overload, but being able to run to a particular HR and stay there no matter how the weather, terrain, or mood was changing my speed made my runs a lot more predictable and "fun"

It is a deliberate strategy to distract and disorient those of us who are not nihilists. The joy they take in seeing liberal tears and tizzy fits is disgusting. They don't get mine. They don't get my tears. They get my stoicism and my rage, and carefully metered doses of my attention.

So one of the things that I think is lost on AI proponents is what I call the card catalog effect, a thing I shouldn’t call it because a lot of people probably have no experience with a card catalog.

Maybe tactical beach wizards? In game it's presented as just seeing the future but mechanics wise it's time travel, and it's great!

I guess it was the logical disconnect that I was objecting to, practically, "the rich and powerful use their influence to remain rich and powerful" tracks and is already my go-to for the macro of why a lot of dumb/bad things happen

So confusing how this could possibly be considered open source, the whole point is to maintain the freedom to modify the program behavior? Not just to run it unencumbered which plenty of freeware licenses exist to allow
