ICE would rather perform an involuntary percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy to force feed immigrant detainees on hunger strike, rather than cede to their demands for decent prison conditions and freedom from such wretched detention. Truly awful.

It has been eight days since Wilber Rafael Garcés Pérez was shot by ICE while making a DoorDash delivery in Austin, Texas. He is currently facing a severe medical emergency. The bullet remains lodged in his back, and he is being held at the South Texas ICE Processing Center in Pearsall.

EOIR announced 53 new immigration judges. 79% of the judges have a military service background; 57% of them have prosecutorial experience; 28% of them previously worked for ICE, USCIS or CBP (19% former ICE prosecutors); and—unsurprisingly— only 6% have an immigrant and/or public defense background.

ICE cannot be allowed to hand-wave away this behavior as a “mistake” when the agency’s everyday practice is to racially profile and arbitrarily arrest anyone they perceive to be an immigrant or noncitizen.

Hospitalization on top of normal booking delay would probably keep him invisible on the locator for a bit regardless, but possibly another issue at play here: Since last week ICE has appeared to be excluding EVERY detainee with a final order of removal from showing up in the online locator.
