What I want is a TV documentary channel entirely devoted to documentaries with no quick-cut montages of everything about to happen, which don't give a fuck about keeping my attention, presented by extremely knowledgeable people in a terrible mood who have no interest in trying to make me like them

The RNLI has said the abuse of volunteers in Portsmouth has forced it to close the lifeboat station there and stop operating since September 10. Nearby stations have been providing cover to the area instead. One of the UK's largest coastal cities without a lifeboat because of the far-right.

This is serious. If Reform blatantly, intentionally and knowingly broke election law, they should be held fully accountable. Liberal Democrats have asked the Police and the Electoral Commission to investigate.

Many historians assumed ancient Roman farm women were housekeepers. A closer look suggests female managers oversaw wine production and other profitable processes.

An arrowhead made of #meteorite iron: around 1,500 BC, a meteorite struck #Estonia. A fragment of it arrived - presumably in the baggage of an amber trader - at what is now Lake Biel, #Switzerland. An arrowhead was then made there from the cosmic iron. From Mörigen, 900-800 BC. 📷️ me
A corroded metal arrowhead displayed upright on a thin stand. The triangular point is heavily weathered and rough, with two short side barbs extending from the base. Its surface shows a mottled texture of rust and mineral deposits, giving it an uneven, pitted appearance

I'd appreciate if you read the alt text on this. Thank you. www.tom-cox.com
I'm posting this photo I took of a sunset over the Severn Estuary from Uley Bury hillfort in Gloucestershire as a way to hopefully persuade a few of you to subscribe to my website's newsletter. There is a (very cheap) paying option which allows you to get all of my writing in your inbox and helps me pay the bills but my suggestion would be to subscribe for free initially - which still allows you to read a lot of what I post - and see how it goes. I've lately been feeling the usual incipient pressure that so many authors feel these days to get my new book out there via social media and Bluesky has been remarkably effective for that. I get a buzz out of finding new readers this way, and it's fabulous to connect with people this way, but it's ultimately had a quite corrosive effect on me, often made me feel like I'm pissing people off and wonder why I'm giving so much time to the process, for what is, in the grand scheme of life, relatively little reward, when really I just want to be writing, reading, walking or hanging out with pals. My ultimate hope - maybe a delusional and optimistic one - is that I can get to a point where all the people who want to hear about my writing will do so via the newsletter so I am no longer trying to keep up with the unhealthy pace of social media in order to sell enough books to feel confident that I can keep writing books for the rest of my life. Whatever the case, I'd really appreciate it if you took the time to check out my long form writing on the site, as that's what it's all about for me.

Worth noting that "lol I've resigned" doesn't reset a parliamentary investigation into an MP btw. If they get reelected it resumes, and they still face the consequences if found guilty. Because the people who came up with the process for investigations were not, in fact, idiots.

The nice things about books: once you own them, you own them, forever. No one will be eye tracking your reading habits. No one will make money of you reading the book as many times as you'd like. And the very same book can be read by generations to come. It can last centuries, literally. It's great.

Something beautiful for the weekend! An extraordinary Acheulean handaxe knapped around a fossil shell c. 500,000-300,000 years ago! From West Tofts, Norfolk 📷 MAA Cambridge University collections.maa.cam.ac.uk/objects/4509... #Archaeology
The photo shows a Lower Paleolithic Acheulean biface handaxe knapped from dark grey flint with a creamy-white cortical layer, shown against a black background. The handaxe is roughly tear-drop shaped with a pointed tip and rounded bottom. There is a fossil shell centrally displayed on one face, identified as the Cretaceous bivalve mollusc Spondylus spinosus. Above the shell to the right is a small rectangular museum label. Likely made by an early neanderthal (Homo neanderthalensis) population or an alternative Middle Pleistocene hominin species (H. heidelbergensis s.l.). The toolmaker has knapped the flint in such a way as to seemingly retain the shell in a central position. The shell’s central display has often been described as an example of aesthetic intention by the toolmaker. A recent study (“The West Tofts handaxe: A remarkably average, structurally flawed, utilitarian biface” by Emily Flanders and Alastair Key) concluded it was likely ‘an average utilitarian tool’ in the eyes of its Acheulean maker, and that the aesthetic intent is assumed by the present-day beholder, and not supported by objective evidence.

Measurements 79mm x 35mm x 132mm. Weight 0.375kg.

Collections of the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Cambridge.

THREAD. A collection of photos I have taken of excellent cats I have met on walks. You will find the captions to the photos in the alt text.
A cat on a wall, ranting relatably to me about the way modern TV documentaries are so frantically, pathetically worried about losing the viewer’s attention, employ endless precaps and recaps, lazily emotionally manipulate the viewer with overplayed songs and talk to that viewer as if that viewer is a small child, rather than a fully grown human, or cat.

A stunning amber bead necklace, dating 6th century BC, from Saal a.d.Saale-Waltershausen. It appears that amber served a dual purpose, enhancing the appearance and protecting the women who wore it during the Hallstatt period. The intriguing material, sourced from the Baltic region,...🧵1/2 📷 me
A large necklace made of polished amber beads in various shades from deep brown to golden yellow, strung in a gradient from small to large and back. The central beads are the largest and most vibrant, featuring natural inclusions and striations. The necklace hangs against a warm brown background.

The joy today is that hatred lost. Doesn't matter what you think of Burnham. Farage tried to invite a race riot. He dealt in explicitly racial rhetoric. If he'd won, many journalists would have considered it a vindication of his approach and branded our outrage evidence of how out of touch we are.
