yeah it's absolutely brutal to see. i was a municipal garbage picker for a couple summers and we also were forced to clear out unhoused encampments and that was a pretty radicalizing moment in my youth.

yeah this is what i was about to say. if you actually know the industry/grow up in fort mac you know the oilsands is a shitty business that's needed government subsidies every step of the way. if you're in calgary you just assume the pumpjacks and the oilsands are equivalent.

Generally speaking these people aren't going to respond to facts and logic because they're going through motivated reasoning/confirmation bias, usually through an info bubble. so you need to ask questions and be curious about what they believe and why. i generally play-act confused.

also, doing that work is fucking hard. My body is irreparably damaged. I suffer from mild to severe chronic pain problems because of it. There are few safety nets for manual labourers, and if we want more of them how do we change the environment for workers so many deem as less than?

this reads like a fever dream but also maybe just maybe this stops one person from thinking they can make it rich doing margin trading on FX.
A screenshot of the FX Fighter Kurumi-Chan wikipedia plot section which reads:

When she was in middle school, Kurumi Fukuga's mother Kozue became involved in foreign exchange (FX) margin trading. However, Kozue had secretly been using the family's money, which caused her to lose ¥20 million following the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers and its associated fallout. Unable to bear with the losses and their possible effects on their family, Kozue commits suicide, devastating Kurumi. Vowing to avenge what happened, Kurumi spends her high school and university years becoming interested in FX, hoping to earn back the 20 million her mother lost. Despite some early successes and her good intentions, she realizes that margin trading has its consequences.

Like in many for-profit corporations, CEOs have some kind of sales background. Talk about pipelines, YoY, channel revenue and they are on top of it. They can talk that language. Computers? Nope.

I do think a (possibly hilarious) problem right now is that at the executive/leadership level at many organizations the level of computer literacy is *miserable*. Like "the site said I could download more RAM, how do I do that" level.

this is why the resistance to towers is such BS. people are against apartments. they've been against apartments since the first one went up at spadina and lowther. no density is gentle enough because, again, i think it's truly a class issue.
110
Jordyn Marcellus @jordynmarcellus.ca · 01/10/2026
Yeah you're right, displacement is the better term for what I meant. I don't want to do that shit. Hell, we're looking at cheap condos and we won't even N12 someone with a year's rent just because it's too icky.

Jordyn Marcellus @jordynmarcellus.ca · 01/10/2026
It can be hard to admit that you may have accidentally played a part in decades of renovictions. I say this as someone who has, often thought, "I'm not (cuss)ing gentrifying parkdale" despite many people I know doing just that.
110
Jordyn Marcellus @jordynmarcellus.ca · 01/10/2026
It's by design -tho I don't know how intentional. Our zoning system has created deeply perverse incentives that mean many of the things we could do ~75 years ago just aren't possible now. And zoning is fake, just lines on maps. We could zone Rosedale apartment neighbourhood tomorrow but we don't!
110
Jordyn Marcellus @jordynmarcellus.ca · 01/10/2026
100%! The system, as is, destroys good lower-income housing or renovictions (like multiplexes being converted back to SFH). Lots of developers are sleazebags operating inside a monopoly capitalist system where by dint of their wealth they can pay-to-play. This is the system as designed.

As a renter, I want cheap rents. As a homeowner, I want high rents because it bolsters my land and property values. Then there's aesthetics which... well, aestheticization of politics leads to some darker places.
110
Jordyn Marcellus @jordynmarcellus.ca · 01/10/2026
Yeah, it's why I tend to go with a vulgar class analysis here. Renters understand precarity (why densification needs tons of renter protection alongside it) while homeowners have different incentives. Doesn't help the cult of home ownership-as-investment means many want housing costs to be high.
110
Jordyn Marcellus @jordynmarcellus.ca · 01/10/2026
problem is that a lot of those progressive politicians are homeowners and their class interests _do not intersect_ with us renters.
