On a personal gut level, the worst thing about Trump winning in 2024 for me was the confirmation that people who try to live ethically and virtuously and abide by basic rules of interpersonal responsibility have been taken for total suckers and will not see any rewards for doing the right thing

Closing down the blocks in front of schools to cars is such a no-brainer on a policy level, but would likely trigger a community board thermonuclear war.

This is true and it cuts both ways IMO: He will need competent progressives who normally wouldn’t touch City govt with a 10-foot pole, and he will need competent progs who are already in City govt to help him manage it. Activist/organizer mindset has to cede ground to actually delivering the goods.

The Dodgers announce they are donating $1 million toward direct financial assistance for families of immigrants impacted by recent events in the region, with more announcements to come.
LOS ANGELES - In partnership with the City of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Dodgers have committed $1 million toward direct financial assistance for families of immigrants impacted by recent events in the region.
The Dodgers and the City of Los Angeles have a proven ability to get financial resources to those in critical need, most recently seen in their efforts to aid victims of the January wildfires. Through our support of the city's efforts, the Dodgers will encourage those organizations in a similar position to use their resources to directly support the families and workers who have suffered economic hardship.
In the coming days, the Dodgers intend to make additional announcements with local community and labor organizations, including the California Community Foundation, the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor and others who are directly supporting our communities to aid youth and families with food insecurity, basic essentials and mental health services.
"What's happening in Los Angeles has reverberated among thousands upon thousands of people, and we have heard the calls for us to take a leading role on behalf of those affected," said Stan Kasten, President & CEO, Los Angeles Dodgers. "We believe that by committing resources and taking action, we will continue to support and uplift the communities of Greater Los Angeles."with food insecurity, basic essentials and mental health services.

"I want to thank the Dodgers for leading with this action to support the immigrant community of Los Angeles," said Karen Bass, Mayor of Los Angeles.
"These last weeks have sent shockwaves of fear rippling through every neighborhood and have had a direct impact on our economy. My message to all Angelenos is clear: We will stick together during this time and we will not turn our backs on one another
— that's what makes this the greatest city in the world."

I get the concerns about Mamdanis inexperience but a) that’s what RCV is for, you don’t have to rank him first, and b) even if I would prefer a more technocratic type of left/lib, Zohran has simply run the best campaign which is why he’s our best shot to win

I have a piece in the @sfchronicle.com today about why San Francisco should copy New York's successful congestion pricing model to revitalize downtown: www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/open...
sfchronicle.com
N.Y. is using this controversial idea to fight traffic, fund transit and bring life back downtown. S.F. can, too
Every so often, policymakers are lucky enough to find a rare win-win that makes everyone better off. Congestion pricing is one of those ideas.

Something I’ve been thinking about recently: When we talk about asking older people to stop driving, the thing we’re expected to be most sensitive to is their feelings of lost autonomy. As if it’s gauche to insist on other people’s right to live w/o being menaced by seniors operating deadly machines

The Democratic Party’s problems are not about being moderate or left. That’s a consultant and pundit red herring The problems are in party organization, the culture of “it’s their turn” nominations, candidate recruitment, gerontocracy, inability to shape media topics, and coming off hella lame

In all seriousness I do think the tax structure is a major flaw of the program — the premiums are taken out of paycheck after tax, you can have federal tax withheld from the disbursements but not state tax, and unlike almost all other states that have PFL programs, NY considers it taxable income.

Also: Even if you have an employer who talks a big game about being supportive of families, when you tell them you’d like to take more time off and are entitled to do so by state law, you see really quickly if they’re telling the truth I believe the phrase used in my case was “paternity vacation”

When I had a kid I was able to use NYPFL to space out my leave and supplement the truly pathetic amount I got from my company (6 weeks!) but the NYS program is so haphazardly administered and you get taxed on it twice. No one with a new kid wants to do more paperwork.
