@natashacurry.bsky.social said Burnham's speech had left “important questions unanswered over exactly how the system he envisages would compare to what we have now, who can expect to receive ‘free’ care, and what types of support are included”. Read more in the FT 👇

Overall, Burnham has managed to prove that he understands public exhaustion and wants to make a difference. The next challenge in coming months - and budget - is putting that into action

I've been to a lot of party conferences. Burnham's speech was the best I've heard in a long time. It was emotive but with major policy announcements and a clear diagnosis of how he thinks the country has taken the wrong path. "Public control" is how he thinks it can be put right.

Dementia and Alzheimer's are absolutely devastating not only to the sufferer but for their friends and loves ones as well. Currently if it happens to your parent or partner you're effectively on your own navigating this terrible and often very expensive landscape of care.

One thing I learnt is that the Sudan War is, in part, a proxy battle between Middle East powers. Saudi and Egypt on one side, UAE on the other. Like the proxy fights between the US and Russia during the Cold War in e.g. Angola.

Outstandingly dishonest even by Nigel Farage's standards. Farage knows that the men arrested at Fairford would not have been released if they were still suspected to be terrorists. He's stirring up fear, hatred & resentment against both immigrants & the police. Pure malice.

The Battle for the Right is on a knife's edge. Just 1 in 96 Reform voters would need to change their minds for the Conservatives to retain the official opposition title. A 1 per cent swing from Reform to the Conservatives would leave the Conservatives on 167 to Reform's 101.

For too long the gov has been an observer of the economy when it should have been an active participant. The vision the Chancellor set out today will see the government actively shaping the economy, creating jobs in the industries it wants, in the places it wants, benefitting the people it wants.

Burnham today v impressive. The idea itself, the scale of what is being proposed, the determination to push ahead despite how vulnerable it makes him, and the big fundamental point behind it all: that mainstream politics will only survive if it proves it can solve big problems.

Nearly half of seats are estimated to be won by fewer than 5 points, with an average margin of ~8 - less than half GE2024 Labour's lead is precarious: a 2pt Lab to Ref swing would make Reform largest party, 5pt would give them a majority, 3pt the other way would give Labour one.

This is a dramatic shift from More in Common's July MRP, when Reform UK was estimated to win 293 seats and Labour just 110. Since July, 214 seat estimates have changed, 143 of them to Labour. However, Labour would still be 161 seats down on its July 2024 result.
