I think the biggest thing bsky could so to make the app better is just iterate of features Everything gets stuck at “almost done but not quite polished or good” forever. Communities will probably be the same

text editing has probably done more damage to the fields of computers, HCI, and design than any other incentive or obstacle using runs of characters to represent everything everywhere all of the time, and then elevating it into sacred practices is beyond insane

i expect video editing, websites, graphic design and 3D asset generation to be solved on a “taste” level in a year from now (October 2027)

very simple answer to the “if ur so smart, why aren’t you happy?” question: they don’t want to be happy. they want to be all kinds of other nonsense *but* happy

you notice how it’s only programmers who say things like “software is over”? curious, eh? how the one group of people who only cared about code think that computers are just about code i suppose that “moving bytes around is solved” doesn’t sound as impressive but it’s closer to the truth

TEXT IS NO LONGER THE MATERIAL YOU THOUGHT IT WAS no prizes for writing lots of it! no more mediocre self-indulgence! either be actually good enough that every sentence feels like a blessing or cut cut cut relentlessly so there’s less to suffer through

overly long and winding also starts to feel like LLMprose because they’re constructing dozens of paragraphs of dramatic voice and repetition to Convince you of something that’s actually fairly hollow

it’s disrespectful to the format of the essay to use it in this way Montaigne was remarkably brief and precise in his posting, a true appreciator of just saying what’s needed

i know the Substack people love to celebrate that long form is alive and well but looking at the feed there i’m starting to wish it wasn’t there is a brevity to a tweet thread that trumps every 4k word self-indulgent rant that doesn’t even tell the truth by the end

The concept of ‘language levels’ from racket is, to me, one of the great unsung ideas in computing. Imagine photoshop with extensible affordances gated to your current skill level, or a coding harness, or R studio, or a browser, or a terminal. To me it would be the welcome anti-philosophy to RTFM

Reminded of the deep lore of local-first, that it originally emerged out the question of whether p2p file sharing networks could support collaborative editing. This is one of the first papers about CRDTs: inria.hal.science/inria-001085...
"Currently, peer-to-peer systems demonstrated how they
can ensure scalable content distribution. In their survey [4],
Androutsellis-Theotokis et al. wrote:
  “Peer-to-peer content distribution systems rely
on the replication of content on more than one
node for improving the availability of content,
  enhancing performance and resisting censorship
  attempts.”
We want to reuse these characteristics not only for content
distribution but also for content editing.""networks mainly distribute immutable contents, we want to
distribute updates on this content and manage collaborative editing on it. We are convinced that if we can deploy a
group editor framework on a P2P network, we open the way
for P2P content editing. It means that all existing collaborative editing applications such as CVS and Wiki can be
redeployed on P2P networks and take advantage of availability improvements, performance enhancements and censorship resistance of P2P networks. For instance, Wikipedia [2]
is currently a collaborative encyclopædia that has collected
more than 4,700,000 articles in more than 200 languages.
Wikipedia has more than 50 million of page requests per day.
200,000 changes are made every day [1]. However, Wikipedia
needs a costly infrastructure to handle the load. Hundreds
of thousands of dollars are spent every year to fund the infrastructure. A P2P massive collaborative editing system
would allow to distribute the service, tolerate failures, improve performances, resist to censorship and share the cost
of the underlying infrastructure."
