In it, we imagine a "quantum plumber", who knows that one path of an interferometer is blocked, and wants to find the optimal strategy for identifying with certainty which path this is. The answer turns out to touch on information theory, noncommutativity, and contextuality.

Excited to announce our paper on the Quantum Plumber's Problem, which some of you may have heard me talk about this summer, is finally up on the arXiv: arxiv.org/abs/2609.11416

The Quantum Plumber's Problem
Recent work quantified the notion of quantum counterfactual gain for an extended Elitzur-Vaidman bomb test style scenario, through a connection to the negativity of the Kirkwood-Dirac quasiprobability...

I'm also pleased to say that, alongside the 10 £300 Rank Prize funded bursaries, we are funding an additional ten £300 student bursaries (with hopefully more depending on interest and sponsorship)! This hopefully should ensure no PhD student is prevented from taking part due to financial concerns.

Ooh, good point - never realised that. Guess that's why we have to go "sk" rather than "sc" for skein, ski, skip, etc in English. Maybe it was George Lucas's attempt to get it to be pronounced with a french-style soft-s ç-sound, but without wanting to have to use diacritics?
