It was so beautiful, so pure, the perfect research methods piece and somehow completely ignored by Keir Starmer even though it explained exactly how he shot himself in the dick with his own gun.
The timing of this highly salient event during ongoing fieldwork for the British Election Study (Fieldhouse et al., 2025) enables us to leverage an ‘unexpected event during survey design’ (UESD) identification strategy (Munoz et al.,2020) to identify the causal effects of exposure to Labour’s
rhetorical shift. By exploiting both the as-good-as-random variation in survey timing and a panel data framework, we estimate within-individual
changes in immigration attitudes, party perceptions, and vote intentions attributable to treatment. **Our identification strategy thus offers a rare combination of internal and external validity: exogenous assignment to a real-world treatment in a large-N survey.** [yeah baby]
Our analysis proceeds in three steps. First, we show that Starmer’s speech caused a sharp increase in the salience of immigration, evidenced by increased media reporting as well as spikes in internet search activity and online political discussion. Second, we demonstrate that exposure to the speech caused voters to update their perceptions of
the UK Labour Party, identifying the social democratic party as more anti-immigration and right-leaning. This re-evaluation of the party’s position, however, coincided with more negative assessments of the party’s handling of the issue alongside a spike in the overall assessment of immigration as the most important issue of the day. Rather than neutralising the issue, Labour’s accommodation made it more salient. Finally, we demonstrate that Labour’s shift right-ward on immigration provided zero electoral rewards. Instead, we find robust evidence that treatment induced within-individual declines in Labour support across several measures. On average, treatment decreased voting intentions for Labour by 1.2 percentage-points (p<0.05) and resulted in a
3.9 percentage-point (p<0.05) haemorrhage in support from Labour’s
own former voters without attracting any new supporters.

Come to Basel for a short stay at the #ForumBasiliense and work on “Errors! Mistakes, Deceptions, and Corrections” See more on the theme here, call below. forum-basiliense.unibas.ch/fileadmin/us...
Call for applications: Forum Basiliense Junior Fellows
In response to the worldwide acceleration of social change, the University of Basel, Switzerland's oldest university, founded the Forum Basiliense, a research center and platform for interdisciplinary dialogue.
In the fourth call for applications for fellowships in Basel. In 2027, the intellectual focus for the groups of international fellows and guests at the Forum Basiliense will be “Errors! Mistakes, Deceptions, and Corrections”
.
At some point, it inevitably becomes part of every work process and every scientific problem: the occurrence of the first major mistake. To err is human, as the Latin proverb goes. The duo of trial and error is one of the best-known and most successful methods for modern advances in technology and science. Yet by no means is every kind of mistake made with good intentions, inevitable, or even legitimate. Over time, every relevant social practice is infiltrated by malicious attempts at deception
and fraudulent schemes, which in turn raise questions about the effectiveness of warning systems and control mechanisms. Yet despite the enormous significance of the ever-present forces of error,
mistake, deception, and the like, it becomes clear: It is surprisingly rare to find systematic, interdisciplinary reflections on the concept of error in terms of its historical dimensions, manifestations,
and social consequences.

We invite fellows for visits of three to six months during 2027, preferably during the spring or the autumn term. Fellows are expected to participate in events and in scientific exchange (a regular colloquium) during their stay.

You hold an excellent PhD or a junior professorship in any of the disciplines represented at the
University of Basel. Fellowships are awarded based on scientific merit, the quality of the application,
and how the application speaks to the theme of "Errors! Mistakes, Deceptions, and Corrections”. We
welcome applications from all over the world. We offer
The Forum Basiliense is a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative platform. We strive to be an
inclusive, supportive, and enthusiastic work environment for a team of fellows with diverse interests
and personal backgrounds. The medium-sized city of Basel, which is located at the tri-national border
of Switzerland, Germany, and France, is known for its high quality of life, multilingual inhabitants,
international flair, and rich cultural environment.
The fellowships offer an exciting opportunity for highly motivated and proficient PostDoctoral scholars
to contribute to a vibrant research community, expand their personal networks, and advance their own
projects. As a fellow, you will be part of the lively and active research environment at the University of
Basel and take part in scientific and academic events organized by the Forum Basiliense.
The fellowship grant offers CHF 5000 per month for the duration of your stay in Basel, travel costs,
office space, subsidized accommodation at the University guest house, and other benefits.
To apply
Please include the following documents in your application:
Project proposal (3-5 pages max.) describing what you plan to accomplish during your fellowship.
Please indicate your contribution to debates around "Errors! Mistakes, Deceptions, and Corrections”
and include how long you would like to stay in Basel (3-6 months).
• CV including publication list
• One contact at the University of Basel
• 2 reference letters
We look forward to receiving your completed application by 20 July 2026 via the University's online
application portal.
For inquiries, please contact Dr. Julia Büchele (j.buechele@unibas.ch)

Here's the serious bit for anyone who'd rather skip the 4000 words of jokes
Because the truth is, tech doesn't have an image problem. It doesn't have a message problem. It has an intention problem. What's wrong with the axe murderer who broke into my house is not that he hasn't successfully persuaded me to buy into his narrative. What's wrong is that he's trying to kill me with an axe. Similarly, when you launch a product that's designed to put millions of people out of work, block access to sources of verifiable truth, replace human creativity with slop, and lower the barriers to every sort of atrocity, the problem isn't that you haven't told the public a good story about those things. The problem is that you are trying to do them. (
There are things in the world that are more important than money. The fact that you seem not to believe this, that you seem to think any motive beyond ruthless acquisitiveness is fake, dishonest, or childish, is the heart of your problem. Your attitude is not by any means unique to tech, but the
