So, outside temperature on our balcony now hit 43 degrees celsius. After a week of crushing heat, I’ve overheard people say that it was now time for decisive political action. Good, I think…

Come to Basel for a short stay at the #ForumBasiliense and work on “Errors! Mistakes, Deceptions, and Corrections” See more on the theme here, call below. forum-basiliense.unibas.ch/fileadmin/us...
Call for applications: Forum Basiliense Junior Fellows
In response to the worldwide acceleration of social change, the University of Basel, Switzerland's oldest university, founded the Forum Basiliense, a research center and platform for interdisciplinary dialogue.
In the fourth call for applications for fellowships in Basel. In 2027, the intellectual focus for the groups of international fellows and guests at the Forum Basiliense will be “Errors! Mistakes, Deceptions, and Corrections”
.
At some point, it inevitably becomes part of every work process and every scientific problem: the occurrence of the first major mistake. To err is human, as the Latin proverb goes. The duo of trial and error is one of the best-known and most successful methods for modern advances in technology and science. Yet by no means is every kind of mistake made with good intentions, inevitable, or even legitimate. Over time, every relevant social practice is infiltrated by malicious attempts at deception
and fraudulent schemes, which in turn raise questions about the effectiveness of warning systems and control mechanisms. Yet despite the enormous significance of the ever-present forces of error,
mistake, deception, and the like, it becomes clear: It is surprisingly rare to find systematic, interdisciplinary reflections on the concept of error in terms of its historical dimensions, manifestations,
and social consequences.

We invite fellows for visits of three to six months during 2027, preferably during the spring or the autumn term. Fellows are expected to participate in events and in scientific exchange (a regular colloquium) during their stay.

You hold an excellent PhD or a junior professorship in any of the disciplines represented at the
University of Basel. Fellowships are awarded based on scientific merit, the quality of the application,
and how the application speaks to the theme of "Errors! Mistakes, Deceptions, and Corrections”. We
welcome applications from all over the world. We offer
The Forum Basiliense is a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative platform. We strive to be an
inclusive, supportive, and enthusiastic work environment for a team of fellows with diverse interests
and personal backgrounds. The medium-sized city of Basel, which is located at the tri-national border
of Switzerland, Germany, and France, is known for its high quality of life, multilingual inhabitants,
international flair, and rich cultural environment.
The fellowships offer an exciting opportunity for highly motivated and proficient PostDoctoral scholars
to contribute to a vibrant research community, expand their personal networks, and advance their own
projects. As a fellow, you will be part of the lively and active research environment at the University of
Basel and take part in scientific and academic events organized by the Forum Basiliense.
The fellowship grant offers CHF 5000 per month for the duration of your stay in Basel, travel costs,
office space, subsidized accommodation at the University guest house, and other benefits.
To apply
Please include the following documents in your application:
Project proposal (3-5 pages max.) describing what you plan to accomplish during your fellowship.
Please indicate your contribution to debates around "Errors! Mistakes, Deceptions, and Corrections”
and include how long you would like to stay in Basel (3-6 months).
• CV including publication list
• One contact at the University of Basel
• 2 reference letters
We look forward to receiving your completed application by 20 July 2026 via the University's online
application portal.

Teaser abstract (as no further edits needed) — no book ref in the article title, but plenty in the text, forthcoming in #EPD.
Abstract for Article 'Unseeing urban divides in Luanda and Maputo', by Jon Schubert and Jason Sumich:
Taking China Miéville’s novel "The City & The City" as our point of departure, we develop the idea of “unseeing” as a central cultural skill to make sense of, and live with, contemporary urban inequality. Based on long-term ethnographic fieldwork in Luanda and Maputo, we posit unseeing as a useful heuristic to capture the processes by which divisions between disparate urban lifeworlds are produced and upheld. While unseeing is a necessary, entrained social practice to live with the contradictions of contemporary capitalism, urban life also offers opportunities for moments of “breach” that reveal both the forces that reassert social division and the potential of practices that seek to force people to see rather than unsee.
