When Cody Cooper sees a cracked footpath, fallen tree or broken sign, he calls it in. Now the Christchurch City Council has grown so frustrated with the volume of his requests that a senior staff member suggested “we should ban him for life”. www.thepress.co.nz/nz-news/3605...
Cody Cooper says he is trying to make the city better. He stands with an example of his work - the curb, while not perfect, was repaired after a man fell through it getting off a bus and Cooper reported it.

I was in Cody’s meeting with staff. My take is: the council customer support management software is not fit for purpose, particularly the integration with SnapSendSolve. Banning someone for providing *too much* feedback is the wrong solution here

Now that Main Nth Rd has been handed back to the Christchurch City Council I’m keen to see it redesigned to turn over more road space to pedestrians, and in particular add more pedestrian crossings. Like this bit near my house has almost 400 metres between crossing points.
A map of Redwood in north Christchurch, New Zealand. A poorly drawn red line shows that the distance between the crossing outside redwood library to the next crossing at Prestons Road. The gap between these is almost 400 metres.

It's been a day in NZ politics. A short and probably incomplete list: 1) the govt has canned 60% of kianga ora's housing projects. That's 1019 no longer being built. #nzpol

Tomorrow, the Council will make a decision on the Wheels to Wings Cycleway (once again, possibly for the fourth time). There are eight options, with the likely result being a deferral to varying extents and limited construction. Keep an eye out for our coverage!

Today Christchurch city councilors voted to allow more housing in outer suburbs like Hornby and Belfast but not just outside of the four aves. They limited the city centre walkable zone upzoning to inside the four aves as the IHP surprisingly recommended.

So due to Health and Safety (some people injured themselves on the curb) there is now a bright yellow fence almost enclosing the bike parking at Woolworths Church Corner and 2/5 bike racks have been removed. It's now pretty awkward to use and will fill up even more often.

To say I am spitting tacks is an understatement of how furious I am with Christchurch's incompetent mayor and the councillors who insisted on e.g. pushing through a stadium that we knew the city couldn't afford. As a cyclist who is a frequent user of both libraries and pools, this hits hard.
Christchurch city council considering shutting libraries

Hefty rate rises in Auckland, denial of a financial crisis in Wellington and now Christchurch mayor Phil Mauger has told The Press that the council is “in shit creek financially”. As Tina Law reports, Mauger says there are going to be some “seriously unhappy people”, but the council will have to make some hard decisions. Mauger said he did not know the full details but that council debt had risen to about $2b. He says some smaller libraries might have to close “for a while”. Swimming pools might have their hours reduced, new water mains might not be put in, roading work might be delayed and cycleways could be on the chopping block. Councillors are meeting today to hear the full extent of cuts proposed by council staff at a private briefing.
