This is a rough call… part way through day one in 2024 and the health app tells me this year’s average activity energy is below that of 2023. I don’t think I’ll get too concerned - there’s plenty more bike rides and walks to be had this year 🚲🚶🏽🙂

A challenge with walking or cycling is people blocking intersections. This behaviour takes away the option for people to use active transport. People using wheelchairs, mobility scooters, trikes and cargo bikes would all have difficulty navigating the narrow gap between the motor vehicles.
A photo recorded from a bicycle mounted camera. It shows an intersection blocked with motor vehicles. A person on the far side has a green light and is waiting to cross, they were forced to walk between the motor vehicles. The person riding the bike also has the green light, but is also blocked by motor vehicles in the intersection.A photo recorded from a bicycle mounted camera. The person riding the bike has the green light to go through the intersection. To the left is a driver of a motor vehicle that has turned into the blocked intersection. Two other drivers are also stopped in the cycle lane. The person riding the bike has to weave between these vehicles.A photo recorded from a bicycle mounted camera. “a car drove into the front yard…” Unbelievably bad wording from RNZ - it completely ignores the fact that there was a person driving the car and they were responsible for this. I really hope the person that was hit makes a full recovery. So sad this has happened.
Screenshot of a Facebook post from RNZ describing a motor vehicle crash. The wording makes no mention that a driver was responsible for the crash.

This is what was written:

“A hit and run crushed a Napier woman against a tree, leaving her in intensive care with critical injuries yesterday.

Police said a car drove into the front yard of a property on Wyatt Ave in Onekawa and smashed the woman into a tree at about 6pm yesterday.”
