'Feelings of contempt born of inchoate, unacknowledged fear - civilization's fear of nature, men's fear of women, power's fear of powerlessness.' Roy is a magician with words. This book really undid me.

'Call me if you have any problems. I'm Scorpion. Nobody can defeat me, okay?' Finally watched Love Exposure (2008) and it's as good as everyone says it is. Looking forward to thinking about it for the rest of my life.
Image is a shot from the film 'Love Exposure' (2008) directed by Sion Sono. The image shows a desolate sandy landscape under a blue sky dotted with clouds. The centre of the frame is dominated by an enormous white stone cross which is being supported by four people; a boy in black, a girl in a school uniform, a man in black and a woman in a red dress. They are all struggling under the weight of the cross.

From the first moment of Happyend, I felt like I was in a safe pair of hands. Poetically shot, finely balanced, beautiful.

I came to Tehanu a bit late, but so did Le Guin, and I think I came to it precisely at the perfect time. Her writing always transfixes me, poetic, elegant, and simple, and Tehanu is such a lovely exploration of power and gender.

Creatives in the UK deserve strong trade unions that represent their interests and fight for a better creative ecology. We don't have that yet and I know a lot of people have felt let down by the society of authors, but we can change it for the better.

Every writer against genocide belongs in their union. The Society of Authors does not stand for a free Palestine. Not yet. Amid Israel’s destruction of libraries, bookshops, printing presses and publishing houses in Gaza, the SoA’s lack of solidarity is driving members to leave the union. [1]

I love stories where each new perspective unpeels everything you thought you knew and Hirokazu Kore-eda's Monster does that masterfully. Such an achingly beautiful film that treats its characters with immense sensitivity.
A still from the film Monster (2023). Two boys are running through green foliage and sunflowers. They are wet and muddy and look happy.

Watched Nickel Boys at the weekend. It really took my breath away, this is the kind of art that sets me off, beautiful, moving, so damn smart, every second on screen has a thought behind it, nothing is extraneous it's just pure art on every level.
Still image from the film Nickel Boys (2024). The image show the two main characters - Elwood and Turner - standing next to each other and looking up at their reflections in a reflective ceiling. The camera stares down at them through the ceiling they are looking at. Elwood is facing on the viewers left and facing towards the viewer. Turner is on the right and his body faces away from the viewer. Elwood's expression is thoughtful and Turner's is more playful.

The key points are “The Culture War is a right wing project to attack freedom of speech by demonising and delegitimising left wing ideas disguised as a defence of it” and “For several decades now, this has relied on taking the most extreme thing some random has (or in most cases hasn't) said to paint the left as a bunch of weirdos that will get you arrested for asking for black coffee, instead of people who want to improve society somewhat”.

Long overdue, I saw Pather Panchali. What a film! Poetic and intimate. This is the start of Apu's story but it's a film about women. The old woman, the mother, the maid, their small joys are so sweet, but mostly they broke my heart. Such a sensitive portrait of having dreams that feel out of reach.
A still image from the film Pather Panchali (1955). In black and white, the image shows a little boy having his hair combed by his slightly older sister. Their mother sits beside them and smiles lovingly at them both. They are wearing rural Bengali dress from the time period.

I've seen it a few times now and every time Jigarthanda DoubleX just makes me happy. It's such a dense, dynamic, explosion of a film, heaving with villains and bad intentions. A wild ride. (Shout out to my lady Malaiarasi - she's a badass with not enough screen time.)
A still image from the film Jigarthanda DoubleX (2023). Two men sit across from each other in a courtyard. The man on the left wears dark clothes and sits on a simple wooden chair. The man on the right wears lighter clothes, he is smartly dressed, and he sits on a throne with two elephant tusks decorating the backrest. A portrait photo of the actress Nimisha Sajayan. She is in costume for the film Jigarthanda DoubleX in which she plays the character Malaiarasi.
